Lesson Overview
So far, we have progressed in dividing
fractions by fractions, even with uncommon
denominators.

Today, we will focus on creating our OWN

word problems involving dividing fractions by
fractions!!

This will help us understand difficult word

problems that we will begin to work on next
week.

Measurement Division
The first step to creating our own word problem, is deciding if we want to make a measurement
division word problem, or a partitive division word problem. Today, we will focus on
measurement division.

Remember that with measurement division, we are trying to find out how many groups we can
make. For example:
1
2

Lets start with the following problem:

1
8

A) How many ______________ are in ______________ (think of the recent quiz)?

Draw a Model 3 minutes

The second step requires us to draw a model of the problem.

A) Draw a model to represent (remember that they do not have common denominators!)

Solve it and Choose a Unit! 2

What is the answer to ?

After solving this question, we need to create a unit for the word problem we will soon create. A unit
is any measurement that there is one of. Here are examples of units:
Miles
Pounds

Hours
Meters
Feet
Ounces
In measurement division, the divisor and the dividend must be the SAME unit.

Create a Story Situation!! 6

minutes
The final step is to create our own story problem! A story problem includes all of the information that
we need to solve it, but it MUST be:
Realistic
Short
Make sense
Be very clear

It may take some time for you to find a story situation that works well, but this is where your group
comes in!
1

Using our divisor and dividend, here is an example: Mr. E has 2 pound of cherries. It takes 8 pound of
cherries to make one cherry cookie. How many cherry cookies can Mr. E make?
Make your OWN story problem. You may not use the same type of situation I used.

Part II - Draw a model for this problem

Part III Find the answer
Part IV Choose a unit

Part V Create a story problem!

Another Example

Mr. E has teaspoon of honey left to make green tea. If it takes teaspoon of honey to make
4
2
one cup of green tea, how many cups of green tea can Mr. E make?

Create Your Own! 5 minutes

Working in your groups, using the same dividend and divisor, create your own story problem.
You may use the same units, but your situation must be your own. You can try using other units
(cups, yards, miles, etc) if you wish.

What did we learn?

How did we extend our work with division with fractions in this lesson?
What was your biggest challenge in creating a story problem involving division with
fractions?
