Recognize when an athlete has an internity injury, such as a

ruptured spleen, bruised kidney, or testicular trauma.
Discern whether an athlete is in an early or an advanced , lifethreatening stage of an internal organ injury.
Care for the injured athlete while waiting for emergency medical
assistance.

Monitor if an athlete is exhibiting minor signs of an internal

injury.

These injuries may seem minor but It can progress into lifethreatening conditions.
Its essential that medical personnel handle internal organ
injuries.
How to minimize complications of internal organ injuries :
Recognize the signs and symptoms of spleen, kidney and
testicular injuries.
Monitor the athlete until medical help arrives.
Educate the athlete and parents about the signs and
symptoms of internal injuries.

RUPTURED SPLEEN
A ruptured spleen is an emergency medical condition that occurs when
the capsule-like covering of the spleen breaks open, pouring blood into
your abdominal area. Depending on the size of the rupture, a large
amount of internal bleeding can occur.
CAUSE : The spleen can rupture when the abdomen suffers a severe
direct blow or blunt trauma. The spleen is the most frequent organ to be
damaged in blunt trauma injuries involving the abdomen. That's true
regardless of your age.
The following are among the frequent causes of spleen injuries:

Motor vehicle accidents

Injury during contact sports, such as football and hockey
Bicycle accidents, such as falling into your bicycle's handlebars

Domestic violence

Diseases that increase the risk for a ruptured spleen

include:
Infectious mononucleosis; in some cases, a ruptured
spleen is the first sign of the illness
Blood (hematological) diseases such as hemolytic
anemia and certain types of lymphoma
Malaria

Trauma to the spleen requires immediate medical attention

because it could indicate heavy internal bleeding.

SYMPTOMS OF A RUPTURED SPLEEN

A ruptured spleen causes abdominal pain, usually severe,
but not always. The severity and even the location of
the pain depend on how badly the spleen has ruptured
and how much blood leaks out. Pain may be felt in these
locations:
Left side of the abdomen under the rib cage
Left shoulder, because nerves of the left shoulder and
left side of the diaphragm originate from the same
location and the rupture may irritate these nerves

FIRST AID
Send for emergency medical assistance if the initial signs and symptoms
progress to the advanced stages.

Monitor breathing and circulation and provide CPR if needed.

Treat for shock if necessary and send for emergency medical assistance if it
occurs.

If signs and symptoms do not progress to the advanced stages, but tenderness
over the upper abdominal area persists for more than 15 minutes, call the
athletes parents or guardian to take athlete to a physician.

PREVENTION

Require athletes to wear

appropriate protective
padding in contact
sports.
Do not allow athletes who
have mononucleosis to
participate until examined
and released by a physician.
Mono can cause the spleen
to enlarge and be risk of
contusion injuries.

BRUISED KIDNEY

Cause : Direct blow to either side of the

midback.

Symptoms

Instant pain
Pain in the lower back area, usually on one side

Nausea
Vomiting
Blood in the urine

Muscle spasms in the back muscles

Blood in the urine is a possible symptom of a bruised

kidney.

PREVENTION
Require athletes to wear appropriate
protective padding such as kidney
pads or a flak jacket in contact sports.

Treatment of a bruised kidney may

require a visit to health care professional.

A person with a bruised kidney may receive

intravenous fluids.

Limiting fluid intake may be necessary to avoid pain

when treating a bruised kidney.

Drinking less fluid can lower the workload for a

bruised kidney.

TESTICULAR TRAUMA
CAUSE : DIRECT BLOW TO THE GROIN AREA.

Symptoms
Nausea (especially
common with
testicular torsion)

Bruising or
discoloration of
the scrotum

Swelling of the
scrotum

Blood in the
urine

Difficulty
urinating

FIRST AID
Assist the athlete into a position that feels the most comfortable.

Encourage the athlete to take slow ,deep breaths. Apply ice to the area
for 15 minutes

Send the athlete to physician if the pain does not stop after 20 minutes,
if the testicles draw upward, if the athlete has bloody or cloudy urine, or
if the testicles exhibit swelling, discoloration, or tenderness more than
an hour after the injury occurred.

PREVENTION

Require athletes to wear athletic

supporters and protective cups
(in contact sports).
