Meaning of the word
‘Processor’:
An integrated computer circuit
that performs all the functions
of a CPU.

An integrated circuit that

contains the entire central
processing unit of a computer
on a single chip.

Meaning Of Word Processers

History of ‘Processors’
First Inventors of processors: Intel
Origin of Micro-processor: 1965–70
The first commercial microprocessor that was
invented in 1971: INTEL 4004
It was first designed for use in a Calculator but was
marketed as: "programmable controller
for logic replacement".

History of processors
The Intel 4004 was followed with:
 4040
 8008
 8080
 8068
 80186
 80286
 80386
 486
 Pentium

History of processors
Other families include:
Motorola 6800 and 680x0 families
National Semiconductor 16000 and National
Semiconductor 32000
SPARC
ARM
MIPS
ZILOG Z8000
PowerPC
Inmos Transputer

History of processors
Important
Characteristics of
Micro-Processors
 The widths of its internal and external Address
Bus and Data Bus
 Clock Rate
 Instruction Set
 A single chip microprocessor may include other
components such as memory
(RAM,ROM,PROM), Memory Management,
caches, floating-point unit, input/output
ports and timers. Such devices are also known
as microcontrollers.

Dual Core

Dual Core systems are those that contains two

separate physical computer processors
in the same chassis.

Refers to mainstream x86-architecture
microprocessors from Intel.

We can remotely isolate, diagnose, and repair

infected desktop and mobile workstations
wirelessly and outside of the firewall, even
if the PC is off, or the OS is unresponsive.

Price: $64-$81
Core 2 Duo
 The Core 2 brand refers to a range of Intel’s
consumer 64bit*86-64 single, dual, and quad-
core CPUs based on the Intel core micro
architecture.
 Core-based microprocessors do not have
Hyper-threading technology.
 It is further divided into:

 Core 2 Extreme

 Core 2 Quad

 Core 2 Solo

 Price: $113-$266
Core 2 Quad
It was designed to handle massive
compute and visualization workloads.

It is enabled by powerful multi-core

technology.

They are built on 45nm Intel Core

microarchitecture enabling faster,
cooler, and quieter desktop PC and
workstation experiences.

It can be remotely isolated,

diagnosed, and can repair infected
desktop and mobile workstations
wirelessly and outside of the firewall,
even if the PC is off, or the OS is
unresponsive.

Price: $163-$316
Core i7
 It was the first processors released using the
Intel Nehalem micro architecture and the
successor to the Intel Core2family.

 The Core i7 identifier applies to the initial

family of processors codenamed
Bloomfield.

 On-die memory controller: the memory is

directly connected to the processor. It is
called as the uncore part.

 Price: $284-$999
Atom
 Intel Atom is the brand name for a line of
x86 and x86-64 CPUs (or microprocessors)
from Intel, designed in 45 nm CMOS and
used mainly in Netbooks.

 There are 2 divisions of atoms Silverthorne is

called the Atom Z series and Diamondville is
called the Atom N series.

 The performance of a single core Atom is

equal to around half that offered by an
equivalent Celeron.

 Price: $43-$44

Athlon
 Earlier Athlon processors with backside
L2 cache were produced in a Card
Module package.

 Performance of Athlon microprocessors

was improved even further when the
frequency of the Front Side Bus was
increased from 200 to 266 MHz.

 The fastest processors from the AMD

Athlon CPU family are 1.4 GHz
A1400AMS3C.

 Price: $60 -$87

Phenom
 AMD Phenom™ processors were
designed for megatasking—running
multiple, multi-threaded
applications.

 Works automatically without the

need for drivers or BIOS
enablement.

 Helps virtualization software to run

more securely and efficiently
enabling a better experience when
dealing with virtual systems.

 Price: $112-$245
Turion
 Designed to boost performance by
directly connecting the processor to
the memory, thus significantly
reducing memory latency.

 Reduces power consumption by

dynamically switching the
performance states.

 It boosts overall system performance

through a dedicated high-speed, low-
latency I/O interface.
Sempron
 The AMD Sempron processor saves
you time and effort; enabling your
system to boot and load your
applications quickly.

 Built-in security with Enhanced

Virus Protection.

 It lets you enjoy a dynamic Internet

experience with smooth streaming
video and audio.

Intel’s and AMD’s Market
share
Intel’s and AMD’s Market share
It is said that Advanced Micro Devices(AMD) was losing market share to Intel Corp. in desktop
and server markets due to product lineup that cannot compete against rival’s family.

There is a lack of speedy microprocessors from the AMD for demanding customers.

On an overall unit basis, Intel had 76.7% market share, a gain of 0.4% in Q4 2007, according
to IDC. AMD commanded 23.1% of shipments, a loss of 0.4%.

AMD is reeling from an awful quarter in which it posted a $611 million loss.

The Core Solo was nice, but Intel's Core 2 Duo is the real beauty.

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor is generally more powerful than AMD's Athlon64 X2/FX series in
games.

Intel’s and AMD’s Market share

Thus the final output leads to:
VS
Intel AMD
  Intel’s Core 2 Duo products are
currently manufactured on 65nm  AMD Athlon64 X2 processors are
technology. built on the company’s 90nm SOI
process.
 The memory controller is not built
into the CPU.
 The memory controller is
built into the CPU.
 Intel’s E6420 was able to decrypt a
file about 15% faster.
 While AMD’s 5600 wasn’t able to
decrypt as Intel was able to.
Conclusion
There were always a tug-of-war between AMD and Intel as it will
always remain.

Each company comes with their latest processor ranges and beats
their rivals with either price or performance.

We have always been more concerned about the name and the
product rather than delving deep into the underlying technology that
separates them.

As the battle between these processor giants is going on from hard
to harder every day, the winner of this battle is us, the consumers.
