The Internet

A worldwide computer network where there is a variety of

information and communication means as well as it being a
means of exchange between people.

Domain Names and IP Addresses

Any differences between them?
1

A domain name is the part of a network address which identifies it as belonging to a particular domain, whereas a IP
address is a unique string of numbers separated by full stops that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to
communicate over a network.
The domain name functions as a link to the IP address where as the IP address is an actuall set of numeric instructions.

The link points to where the IP address information is.

The domain name has three pieces of information in it, the IP address is basically just one piece of information.

The IP address is like the individual, but the domain name is more like the family.

Your computer has a individual IP address, no other computer in the world will have the same IP address. But anyone can
use a domain name from any computer.

You can mask the appearance of your IP address for security, bt you cannot
change a domain name.

Data Packets and Packet Switching

Data Packets

Packet Switching
2

A data packet is a little bit of

information from a file that can be
sent to many different places
along with lots of other data
packets. Once they reach the
ocation the reassemble and
create the fle again. A data packet
can also be a bunch of
information that has been put
together and sent off to go to
another computer.

When you have a file that you

want to send to someone in
maybe another country, that file is
broken up into many little bits
called data packets and is sent to
lots of different machines called
routers. It will travell throgh
hundreds of routers to get to its
desired location. When it is there it
re-assebels itself. Any lost file that
is boucning around the routers
gets deleted after it has been to a
certain nmber of routers.

Routers

What does it do?

What is a router?
1

A router is a device that transfers

data from one network to another
in an intelligent way. It has the
task of forwarding data packets
to their destination by the most
efficient route. It also exchanges
protocol information across
networks and filters traffic.(It
helps prevent unwanted
intrusion)

A router has a micro computer inside it.

This holds a table in memory that contains
a list of all the networks it is connected to,
along with the latest information on how
busy each path in the network is, at that
moment. This is called the 'routing table'.
When a data packet arrives, the router
does the following:- reads the data
packet's destination address, looks up all
the paths it has available to get to that
address, checks on how busy each path is
at the moment, -sends the packet along
the least fastest path. It also exchanges
protocol information across networks and
filters traffic.(It helps prevent unwanted
intrusion)

Without these websites, I

would not have been able to
complete this to as high a
standard as I hope it is. I
collected information form all
of these websites and strung
them together to from this
presentation. Because
different people created each
web page I know from all the
different points of view what a
router is, what data packets
are.
