Lesson Overview

603 - Yesterday we did a 7th grade

problem! Congratulations!

We have such a good understanding

of dividing with fractions now!
Practice makes perfect!

We did a great job of adding and

subtracting mixed numbers by
converting them to decimals first.
This makes it much easier for us to
add and subtract them!

After Thanksgiving, we will focus on a new

topic called the distributive property, as well
as greatest common factor and least
common multiple.

For today, we will spend a little bit of time

learning interesting things about even and
odd numbers.

Even and odd Numbers 4 minutes

What is an even number?

List some examples of even numbers.

What is an odd number?

List some examples of odd numbers.

Operations with Even & Odd Numbers 3 minutes

What happens when we add two even numbers? Will the sum always be even?

The Sum of Even Numbers 4 minutes

What is the sum of two even numbers?

A) Think of the problem 10 + 14. Draw dots to represent each number.

B) Circle pairs of dots to see if there are any dots left over.

C) Will this be true every time two even numbers are added together? Why or why not?

The Sum of Odd Numbers 4 minutes

What is the sum of two odd numbers?

A) Think of the problem 13 + 15. Draw dots to represent each number.

B) Circle pairs of dots to see if there are any dots left over. What do you notice?

C) Will this be true every time two odd numbers are added together? Why or why not?

The Sum of Odd & Even Numbers 4 minutes

What is the sum of an odd and an even number?

A) Think of the problem 12 + 15. Draw dots to represent each number.

B) Circle pairs of dots to see if there are any dots left over. What do you notice?

C) Will this be true every time an odd and an even number are added together? Why or why not?

D) What if the first addend was odd and the second addend was even. Would our findings still be
same? For example, if we had 15 + 12, would we still have the same results?

Operations with Even & Odd Numbers 3 minutes

Even + Even = ________.

Odd + Odd = ________.

Odd + Even (or even + odd) = ________.
