EVALUATION ACTIVITY 1
In what ways do your media products use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of music promos)
You should go through the final version of your production and select
nine distinct frames which you screengrab. You will be using these to
write about how typical or not of opening sequences your particular
design is, so choose them carefully. You could compare the still to
real promos, commenting on conventions.
You should explore how conventional the following are:
Setting/location
Costumes and props
Camerawork and editing
Genre and how the opening suggests it
Special effects
Representation
Use of narrative / performance
Amplification / Illustration / Disjuncture re: lyrics
EVALUATION ACTIVITY 1
In what ways do your media products use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of music promos)
For your ancillary tasks you should compare them to real digipaks /
magazine adverts and annotate them to explain how you have used
conventions.
You could comment on:
Layout and design features
Genre
Mise-en-scene
Language use
Write about your products as a whole remember that they are part of a
promotional package for an album release so how do they work together
to achieve this? How do they represent the artist / band?
Comment on exhibition where each element will be seen and how it will
represent / promote the band. Remember to consider traditional media
(music channels, music mags, record stores) and new media (facebook,
youtube, iTunes, the web) as potential means of exhibition.
Which music channel will your promo be shown on? Why? Research the
channels audience profile and content to show how your promo will fit in the
schedules. What other new media could be used to exhibit the promo?
How effective are they? Why?
Which magazine would you place the advert in to promote the CD release?
Research the magazines audience profile and content to show how your
promo will fit in with magazines content. Look at synergetic links between
music magazines and music channels explore who owns them!
EVALUATION ACTIVITY 3
You could record a directors commentary where you explain how your
promo appeals to your audience and addresses their expectations.
You should include the following:
How your opening links to other similar promos (and specific genres
of promo) in order to attract the audience.
How you used genre conventions camerawork, editing, mise-enscene, narrative / performance.
You should also record your findings from your audiences response to
the completed production (all three texts). What did they like? Dislike?
Did they meet their expectations? Ensure that you comment on their
feedback.
Remember the ancillaries as well!
Discuss how you learned skills in using the Apple Macs and iMovie
or Final Cut.
Refer to specific technical issues that you learnt about during
shooting / editing e.g. shooting in low light, adding sound / music
during editing. These might be problems / challenges and how you
overcame them.
Take some screen shots of the technologies you used e.g. iMovie
explain what you have learnt about them / how you have used
them. Do same for ancillary tasks.
Write about any other technologies that you used during your
production (what they were and how you used them) e.g.
Blogger(!), search engines, iTunes, Garageband, etc.
