The G.N.D.T.P. units are primarily

coal-fired units and the coal
consumption at maximum continuous
rating (M.C.R.) per unit is about 58
T/Hr. the coal used at G.N.D.T.P. is of
bituminous and sub-bituminous type.
Coal is transported from the coal
mines to the plant site by Railways.

In order to unload coal from the wagons, two

Roadside Tipplers are provided. Each is
capable of unloading 12
open types of
wagons per hour. Normally one tippler will
be in operation while the other will be
standby.

There are two crushers each driven by electric

motor. The maximum size of the crushed coal is
50mm. One crusher works at a time and the
other is standby. The coal is fed to the coal mill
through conveyor belt.

Each mill consists of single compartment drum

bearings, driving motor, coal inlet and
discharge piping balls and lubricating
equipment for mill bearings. There are three
types of steel balls present in each coal mill.

It is a single drum, balanced draught, natural

circulation, reheat type, vertical combustion
chamber consists of seamless steel tubes on all
its sides through which water circulates and is
converted into steam with the combustion of fuel.

The turbine is the prime mover for the

generator in the power plant Different types of
steam turbines used in thermal power plants.
Three main sections of a turbine are:1. Low pressure (L.P.)
2. Medium pressure (M.P.)
3. High pressure (H.P.)

Cooling towers are

massive Ferroconcrete structure
having hyperbolic
profile creating
natural draught of
air responsible for
achieving the
cooling effect.
Cooling tower is as
high as 40 storey
building.

Switch yard is a section where

electricity generated at 11 KV by the
turbo-set is stepped-up by unit
transformers to 132/220 KV for further
transmission through high tension lines
to different cities.

Dust extractions from industrial gases

become a necessity for environmental
reasons. Most of the plants in India use
coal as fuel for generating steam. The
exhaust gases contain large amount of
smoke and dust, which are being
emitted into atmosphere. This poses a
real threat to the mankind as a deserting
health hazards. Hence it has become
necessary to free the exhaust gases
from smoke and dust.

The Electrostatic precipitator utilizes electrostatic

forces to separate the dust particle form the gas
to be cleaned. The gas is conducted to a
chamber containing Curtains of vertical steel
plates.

The hoppers are sized to

hold the ash for 8 hrs.
collection. Buffer plates
provided in each hopper
to avoid gas leakage.
Inspection door is
provided on the one side
of hoper wall.
Thermostatically
controlled heating
elements are arranged at
the bottom portion of the
hopper to ensure free
flow of ash.

Rapping mechanism is provided for collecting and

emitting electrodes. Geared motors drive the
rapping mechanism. The rapping system employs
tumbling hammers, which are mounted on a
horizontal shaft

The rectifier supplies the power for ash

particle charging and collection. The basic
function of the EC is to feed the precipitator
with maximum power input under constant
current regulation.

The ACP houses the power and circuits

required for energizing rapping motor and
heating elements of the precipitator. ACP
controls each gas path. The complete ACP is
of modular type with individual module for
each feeder. ACP equipments are:1. C.R.M.
2. E.R.M.
3. Hopper heater
4. Shaft heater
5. Rapping programmer etc.

The control units present in E.S.P. are:a) EPIC-II & Bepcon sigma- These are
micro processor based units for regulation
and control of the electric power input to
ESP.
b) RTU- RTU is an all purpose unit for using
with all field bus based control equipment
such as ESP. All dater and window
displays are retrieved from the EPIC
controller with which the RTU
communicates.

The apparatus including its associated

auxiliaries employed for switching, controlling
and protecting the electrical circuits.
The input supply taken by switch gear is
132KV with which it charges its two buses
one of 6.6KV and other of 415V.

Basic aim of instrumentation is to achieve safety,

quality reliability and remote automation
operation of the process. The major parameters
installed at GNDTP are as follow: Temperature

Recording and controlling temperatures are

important in design, fabrication, operation and
testing of power generation and utilizing
equipment and associated apparatus.

Thermocouple

Bourdon tube- It consists of a tube of oval

section and of suitable material bent in the form of
a circular arc. The open end through witch fluids
or gases are admitted is fixed and the closed end
is free. The free end is connected to a pointer
through link mechanism to magnify the tip
movement.

Level in various tanks, heaters and at or

vessels is measured in thermal
powerhouse for indication and as well as
for tripping and alarm switches.

DIGITAL CODING-DECODING OF SIGNAL
Digital coding of speech implies coding each
signal sample in the form of bits, to the circuit
used.
Digital decoding implies the separation of analog
signal from signal sent over the line to the
transmission channel.

DISPLAY FUNCTIONS
The purpose of the display is to inform the user
concerning the telephone environment and indicates
terminal status.
