Flexi WBTS - Introduction

Part of the 3G Macro BTS solution.
From the installation and hardware point of view, the Flexi introduces a new way to build BTS sites using modules, without a specific BTS cabinet.
Due to its small weight and size, modular design and full frontal accessibility, this BTS is easy to install in various locations even a wall.
From the feature and performance point-of-view, the Flexi provides a smooth evolution from the UltraSite WCDMA BTS, without compromising
performance or capacity.
The Flexi WCDMA BTS modules can be used with different BTS configurations. The existing site support and auxiliary cabinets can be used to house the
modules.
The Flexi WCDMA BTS consists of two types of RF Modules per frequency band, one System Module, and a transmission sub-module. Same modules
are used in both indoor and outdoor sites.
The Flexi WCDMA BTS was designed for easy installation, commissioning, and maintenance. One person can carry out the modules and install them on
the floor, pole or on the wall. Due to the modular solution, the floor print, space, weight and power feeding system of the site can be optimized. The
acquisition time, cost, and acceptance time of a new site is reduced.
Nokia Flexi WCDMA BTS does not require regular maintenance.

Channel Capacity by SW License

Flexi System Module Channel Capacity is designed to support flexible and cost optimized site capacity evolution.
The channel capacity of Nokia Flexi WCDMA BTS can be optimized depending on the BTS configuration and the required traffic capacity of the BTS site.
More channel capacity will be allocated remotely from NetAct TM by sending Channel Capacity SW License to Flexi WCDMA BTS.
The minimum number of Channel Elements allocated by SW License is one (1) CE supporting both uplink and downlink. Therefore, Flexi WCDMA BTS
site capacity can be optimized in the step of one CE without a site visit.

Future capacity evolution

The Nokia Flexi WCDMA BTS System Module supports capacity expansion. A second System Module can be connected to the extension port of the first
System Module. The second System Module then operates in baseband extension mode.

The Flexi System Module (SM) hosts :

Telecom control.
System operation and maintenance.
Baseband application.
Transmission.
Power distribution functionality.
The System Module can also act as a second system module operating in a baseband extension mode. The SM provides the BTS external
interfaces towards the RNC and other external devices:
BTS Site Element Manager.
External interfaces towards RNC (Iub).
Three external interfaces towards RF module.
Site support system interface (for example, battery back-up).
Auxiliary interface (customer specific 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port with over voltage protection).
Auxiliary interface 1Gbps Ethernet for future expansions.
External alarms and controls interface (customer-specific alarms).
External synchronization input interface.
External synchronization output interface.
The System Module has an integrated BTS clock that distributes the synchronization clock to other BTS modules. The System Module
hardware is HSDPA and HSUPA compliant.
The System Module uses nominal 48 V DC and distributes it on to RF and extension modules. The System Module includes integrated fans.
See the following figure for an exploded view of the System Module.

Functional Blocks
Flexi BTS control and multiplexing
This functionality is responsible for BTS control and management, system
clock generation and distribution to other modules and sub-modules. The
functional distribution of this functionality is as follows:
Control MCU and clock generation: This includes the NBAP termination,
telecom and overall BTS control functionality, system O&M functionality,
external site support system and other equipment control. It generates
system reference clock and frequency reference for synchronizing with
other BTS.
External interface block: This block facilitates the external interface for
external equipment control.
Summing and multiplexing functionality: This functional block is used for
data routing between the radio modules and the baseband (FSP).
RF module interface: This logical functional block is responsible for
providing output/input interface to or from a maximum of three RF
modules.
Flexi WCDMA BTS signal processing (FSP)
The Flexi Signal Processor (FSP) terminates the Iub user plane and is
responsible for L1 processing of the air interface.

Flexi WCDMA BTS Transmission Sub Module (FTXX)

The transmission sub-module supports the following functionalities:
ATM over E1/T1/JT1
ATM over STM-1
Inverse Multiplexing ATM (IMA)
Synchronization
Iub terminations
DNBAP and CNBAP
AAL2SIG and AAL2UP
Operation and maintenance (DCN)
IP functionalities (DHCP, routing, NTP)
Transport performance counters
There are different variants of the transmission sub-module listed on the table.

FTIA

The System Module can be used as a second system module operating in a

baseband extension mode to add channel capacity. In this case, it is connected
to the master system module by connecting optical cable and DC cable. These
items are provided with Flexi System Extension Kit (FSKA).
When the System Module is used as a second system module operating in a
baseband extension mode, a transmission sub-module is not installed. Instead,
a dummy transmission sub-module is installed to provide IP protection. This
item is also provided in Flexi System Extension Kit (FSKA).

Extension System Module

The System Module can be used as a System Extension Module operating in a baseband extension mode to add channel capacity. In this case, it is
connected to the System Module by connecting two optical cables and a DC cable. These items are provided with Flexi System Extension Kit (FSKA).
When the System Module is used as a System Extension Module operating in a baseband extension mode, a transmission sub-module is not installed.
Instead, a dummy transmission sub-module is installed to provide IP protection. This item is also included in Flexi System Extension Kit (FSKA).
When the System Module is used as a System Extension Module operating in a baseband extension mode, external synchronisation input connectors
cannot be used. Synchronisation is provided by the System Module.
When integrating the System Extension Module to Flexi WCDMA BTS, no commissioning is required. Once the System Extension Module has been
connected to the System Module and powered up, the auto detection functions of Flexi WCDMA BTS detect the System Extension Module and connect
the System Extension Module to the normal operation of the BTS. As for software requirements, the auto detection requires that WN4.0 BTS SW exists
and is active both in the System Module and System Extension Module to be connected to.
The System Extension Module provides a basic capacity of 32 CE without the channel capacity licence. Enabling more CE capacity of the System
Extension module for service requires that the channel capacity licence (RAN912 Channel Capasity LK) with sufficient capacity is downloaded to the BTS.

Channel Element Capacity

Channel Elements used in the diferent call types
The System Module provides up to 240 CE capacity. The number of activated CEs is defined by licence control.
A baseband Extension Module is also available, increasing the Flexi WCDMA BTS capacity to 2*240 = 480 CE.

RF Module Description
The RF Module is a stand-alone fully operational transceiver module with integrated antenna filters. The RF Module is able to support one or two sectors
in a WCDMA base station. It hosts the RF functionality and provides control and power supply to the Flexi Antenna line. Radio-related signal processing
is also performed in the RF Module. The RF Module has integrated fans (2 pcs) and a Bias-T.
The following versions are available:

Functional Blocks
The RF Module includes the following functional blocks:

RF control block: There are interfaces from the RF control block towards the System Module through optical connection. Most unit

internal connections are made from the RF control block. Signal processing and unit control functionalities are located in this block.

TX block: Analogue RF parts are located in the TX block.

PA block: The power amplifier block amplifies TX block output signal to a specified output power level.
RX block: In dual version, the RX block includes four 2-carrier receivers and in version B two 2-carrier receivers.
Antenna filter block: Antenna filtering for TX and RX signals is done in the Antenna filter block.
In single version, there is only one TX block, PA block and Antenna filter block. In the RX block, only half of the blocks components are installed.
See the following figures for the functional blocks of the RF Module.
