The Epistle of Paul to the Romans

(January 5,

2015)
1. Authenticity
The authenticity of the Epistle is indisputable, and so acknowledged. The internal
evidence of the Epistle as a whole is in itself convincing. The tone of thought, method
of argument, and style, it has all the peculiar characteristics of St. Paul. The external
evidence is no less complete, including the testimony of such early Fathers as Clement
of Rome, Polycarp, Justin Martyr, Ignatius, and Irenaeus.
2. Time and Place
Equally certain is the time and place of the writing. It was written from Corinth, in the
Spring of 58 A.D. (according to the received chronology of the Acts of the Apostles),
when St. Paul was about to leave that place to take the alms he had collected to
Jerusalem for the relief of the poor Christians there.
3. Occasion of the Writing
The occasion and reason for the visit and the letter is clearly spelled out in chapter 1 of
the Epistle. Vs. 11 for I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual
gift, to the end you may established; that is that I may be comforted together with you
by the mutual faith both of you and me. See also verse 13 Now I would not have
you ignorant brethren, that oft times I purposed to come unto you, (but was let
hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.
- It is thought, based on the depth of the doctrine discussed, that St. Paul had been
1
preparing this Epistle for quite some time, and
having the finished work in his

4. Origin of the Roman Church
The Church at Rome had not be founded by St. Paul. It is clear from the Epistle that
Paul had never been to Rome and knew only of the Church by report. I tis interesting
to note that without ceasing Paul, who had never ministered in Rome prayed for this
church. What does this say about our prayer life? Tradition was that the church of
Rome was founded by St. Peter, but this tradition is without warrant. It has been
suggested, that if Peter had founded the church that Paul would have known this and
made mention of it in his letter. Another tradition suggests that Peter and Paul jointly
preached the gospel in Rome and were both martyred there. It remains unclear as to
who actually founded the church, and perhaps this is why Paul wrote such a lengthy
letter with the expectation that he might shed additionally light on the doctrines of the
faith. Pauls tone in this letter is much different that which he used among the
churches he founded. He does not attempt to admonish or claim any jurisdiction over
them. His tone is more of an appeal with a view toward mutual refreshment and
encouragement. This is a more welcome approach, especially in our day, where
churches are filled with individuals who have received instruction from a variety of
different teachers.
5. Purpose of the Epistle
Pauls letter is not argumentative or controversial. It is rather a carefully reasoned
theological treatise, drawn up with the view of setting forth the writers views of the
meaning of the gospel in its relation to the Law, to prophecy, and to the universal
needs of mankind. The following considerations may help us to understand the
2
apostles real purpose in composing the Epistle
when he did, and sending it to Rome.

The Epistle of Paul to the Romans

(January 5,

2015)
Full of his grand conception of what the gospel was for all mankind, which it was his
special mission to bring home to the conscience of the Church; he had been preaching
this gospel since his conversion with much opposition to his views, much
misconception of them, and much slowness to comprehend them.
As he had preached the gospel from Jerusalem and round about as far as Illyricum
and had fulfilled his mission there; he now sought to bring the gospel to Rome and to
points further West in hope of extending the gospel to the Gentile world. (The House of
Israel and others) At such a time, he is suitably moved to set forth, in a doctrinal
treatise, and support by argument, his views of the far reaching significance of the
gospel, that it (the gospel) might be fully understood and appreciated. The treatise
sets forth the philosophy of the gospel, showing how it meets human needs, and
satisfies human yearnings, and is the true solution to the problems of existence, and
the remedy for the present mystery of sin. And so it is meant for philosophers as well
as simple souls; and it is sent therefore first to Rome, that it may reach even the most
cultured there, and through them commend itself to the earnest thinkers of every
generation. For this the Apostle states that he is a debtor to both the Greeks and the
Barbarians, both to the wise and to the unwise For I am not ashamed of the gospel
of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth, to the
Jew first, and also to the Greek.
6. The Doctrine
Meaning of The Righteousness of God not the righteousness provided by God in the
person of His Son, but rather the Righteousness of God for accepting the
3
responsibility of providing a remedy for mans
sin condition. That is to lift all of His

made alive. But everyman

redeemer, Who loved
them and gave Himself for them. His death atoned not only for their sin,
but for the sin of the
world. His death, burial and subsequent resurrection secured the full and
complete reconciliation
of ALL THINGS, which will be testified to, in due time.

The Law of Christs Dominion is righteousness and life

Every man born into this world - ( kosmos = orderly arrangement) is born under Satans
Dominion or The Law of Sin and Death. This is the Law of the Universe it operates like
every other natural law with which we are acquainted. Take the law of gravity as an example
The law of gravity is in operation 24/7 365. The only way to overcome (be free from) the
effects of gravity, is to APPLY a law which supersedes gravity and allows us to circumvent the
effect of gravity. That higher law is the Law of Aerodynamics. The Law of Aerodynamics allows
us to overcome the effects of gravity; however, we must remember that gravity is ALWAYS
pulling us down; only by consistently APPLYING the higher law of Aerodynamics, can we be
lifted or set free from the effects of gravity.

Vs. # 5 -8 Being delivered from the law (of sin and death) we should serve in newness
of spirit, and not in the
oldness of the letter. The law of the Spirit of Life in Jesus Christ demands
that the letter be viewed

surpasses the letter of the
