Introduction
A scissor lift is a work platform that can raise

and lower people and materials.

They are commonly used when work must be
done at a height without conventional access.
Scissor lifts are so simple to operate and it
can increasing levels of production.
They can also be driven from one location to
another and positioned to resume work
without a lot of set-up time.

Robert Matthews received a US patent for his

Mechanical Rammer in 1901

In 1908 Oscar Knoch was awarded a US
patent for his Chain Rammer for Guns
Eldridge E. Long, who was awarded a US
patent for his Lifting Jack in 1933
In 1951, Yaichi Hayakawa was awarded a US
patent for his Interlocking Chain Stanchion

configuration, Karl Bender received a US
patent for "Compression Resistant Chain"

Working Of Chain Scissor

Lift
The scissor lifts operates in a similar way to that

of a scissor.
The electric power supply is turned on, the gearbox drives the sprocket which is coupled to it by
a chain coupling.
Large thrust is transmitted to the links and the
rollers.
The rollers start moving inwards, thus raising the
load.
The scissor lift rises till it reaches the upper limit.

Actual Chain Scissor

Lift
The

electric
power
supply is turned on, the
gear-box
drives
the
sprocket
which
is
coupled to it by a chain
coupling.
while lowering of the
load, the sprocket is
driven in the reverse
direction. Hence we get
lowering motion of the
scissor lift.

Aesthetic & Ergonomic

The links have been given a taper shape on both

ends to improve the appearance of the scissor-lift.

symmetry improves the look of any product and
also helps in proper balancing of the product.
Noise levels are kept low by giving proper
tolerances and lubrication.
The links have been design the width is almost
equal to five times the thickness for getting a
proportional look.
Continuity- Rounding off all the corners

Applications Of Lift
Construction sites
Loading and unloading of goods at docks or

airports
Veterinary applications, where animals are to
be operated by resting the animal on the
platform
In maintenance operations in shopping malls,
offices or public places
On a film sets for supporting the cameras.
In multistoried parking

Advantages
Precision positioning can be achieved using

Chain-lift.
Less maintenance as nothing more than
annual lubrication is necessary.
Simple to integrate with electrical controls.
Absence of hydraulic system makes it
environmental friendly.
The system is compact thus saving space.

Summary
It can be claimed that this

work of design
optimization is successful in great extent to
reduce
the complexity
in
Scissor lift
actuation.
Obtaining accurate and faster results.
Noiseless operation.
Less maintenance which also results in
saving of money, time and manpower.
