Auguries of Innocence

William Blake was born in London, where he

spent most of his life. His father was a successful
London hosier and attracted by the doctrines of
Emmanuel Swedenborg. Blake was first educated
at home, chiefly by his mother. His parents
encouraged him to collect prints of the Italian
masters, and in 1767 sent him to Henry Pars'
drawing school. From his early years, he
experienced visions of angels and ghostly monks,
he saw and conversed with the angel Gabriel, the
Virgin Mary, and various historical figures.
Independent through his life, Blake left no debts
at his death
on August 12, 1827.
He was buried in

Samuel T. Coleridge
Coleridges poetry
often deals with the
mysterious, the
supernatural and the
extraordinary. While
Wordsworth looked for
the spiritual in
everyday subjects,
Coleridge wanted to
give the supernatural a
colouring of everyday
reality.

classical motifs:

Keats is fascinated by the fact
that art is able to present an
ideal world because it can freeze
actions and emotions: the lover
depicted on the urn will never
actually reach the girl he is
following, the pipers will never
end their song, the streets of the
little town will always be desert

#Glassdoor

Drowsed with the fume of poppies, while

thy hook

Confidential and Proprietary Glassdoor, Inc. 2008-2014

#Glassdoor

Spares the next swath and all its

twind flowers:

Confidential and Proprietary Glassdoor, Inc. 2008-2014

#Glassdoor

And sometimes like a gleaner thou

dost keep

Confidential and Proprietary Glassdoor, Inc. 2008-2014

#Glassdoor

Steady thy laden head across a

brook;

Confidential and Proprietary Glassdoor, Inc. 2008-2014

#Glassdoor

Or by a cyder-press, with
patient look,

Confidential and Proprietary Glassdoor, Inc. 2008-2014

#Glassdoor

Thou watchest the last oozings,

hours by hours.

Where are the songs of Spring? Ay,

where are they?

Confidential and Proprietary Glassdoor, Inc. 2008-2014

#Glassdoor

Think not of them, thou hast thy

music too,

Confidential and Proprietary Glassdoor, Inc. 2008-2014

#Glassdoor

While barrd clouds bloom the softdying day

Confidential and Proprietary Glassdoor, Inc. 2008-2014

#Glassdoor

And touch the stubble-plains with

rosy hue;

Confidential and Proprietary Glassdoor, Inc. 2008-2014

#Glassdoor

Then in a wailful choir the small

gnats mourn

Confidential and Proprietary Glassdoor, Inc. 2008-2014

#Glassdoor

Among the riversallows, borne aloft

Confidential and Proprietary Glassdoor, Inc. 2008-2014

#Glassdoor

Or sinking as the light wind

lives or dies;
sinking

Confidential and Proprietary Glassdoor, Inc. 2008-2014

#Glassdoor

And full-grown lambs loud bleat from

hilly bourn;

Confidential and Proprietary Glassdoor, Inc. 2008-2014

#Glassdoor

Hedge-crickets sing; and now with

treble soft

Confidential and Proprietary Glassdoor, Inc. 2008-2014

#Glassdoor

The redbreast whistles from a gardencroft;

Confidential and Proprietary Glassdoor, Inc. 2008-2014

#Glassdoor

And gathering swallows twitter in the

skies.
