GLUCOSE BIOSENSER

By saurabh mandal

Glucose biosensor
Diabetes is a world-wide public health problem (347 million people
worldwide, WHO report, 2010).
WHO projects that diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of death
in 2030

This metabolic disorder results from

Insulin deficiency
Hyperglycemia and is reflected by blood glucose
concentrations goes higher than the normal range of 80120 mg/dL

The
diagnosis
and
management of diabetes
mellitus requires a tight
monitoring
of
blood
glucose levels.
Accordingly, millions of
diabetics test their blood
glucose
levels
daily,
making glucose the most
commonly tested analyte

Clark and Lyons first

proposed
the
initial
concept
of
glucose
enzyme electrodes in 1962
Clark is considered the
"Father of Biosensors

NANOTECHNOLOGY- NANODEVICE

Nanotechnology has affected almost all

aspects of biomedicine

Nanomaterials
stable, sensitive

Glucose biosensors are of special clinical

and industrial significance because of their
role in monitoring blood-glucose levels

Indeed, glucose biosensors are among the

few commercially successful sensing
products to date
Glucose biosensors account for about 85%
of the entire biosensor market. Such huge
market size makes diabetes a model
disease for developing new biosensing
concepts

Biosensor - compact analytical device or unit incorporating a

biological or biologically derived sensitive recognition
element integrated or associated with a physio-chemical
transducer

three main parts of a biosensor:

(i) biological recognition elements
(ii) transducer
(iii) signal processing system

Glucose Biosensors

first glucose enzyme electrode relied on a thin layer of GOx

entrapped over an oxygen electrode via a semipermeable
dialysis membrane
monitoring the oxygen consumed by the enzyme-catalyzed
reaction

Enzymatic amperometric glucose biosensors are the most

common devices commercially available
glucose measurements are based on:
hexokinase
glucose oxidase (GOx)
glucose-1-dehydrogenase (GDH)
