Restless legs syndrome (RLS) disease


is a neurological disorder characterized by an

irresistible urge to move one's body to stop


uncomfortable or odd sensations.

The sensations you feel during RLS may include:


itching,
throbbing,
numbness,
cramping,
pain.

Diagnosing RLS
There are four key points doctors use to diagnose RLS. They can be
described using the word URGE.
Urge to move the legssometimes accompanied by uncomfortable
sensations
Rest inducedthe urge to move gets worse during inactivity such as
resting, sitting, or lying down.
Gets better with activitymovement such as walking or stretching brings
relief, but unpleasant sensations reappear when you stop.
Evening and nightthe urge to move increases in the evening or at night or
occurs only in the evening or at night.

The Neupro patch delivers the drug rotigotine


continuously through the skin.
Rotigotine is a dopamine agonist, so like other drugs of
this type, it works by activating dopamine receptors in
the body. The patient applies a new patch every 24
hours.

Neupro is a small, thin patch that comes in

three doses: 1mg, 2mg, and 3mg.


Your doctor should start you on a low dose of
Neupro and may change the dose weekly until
you are taking the right amount of medicine to
control your symptoms.

The adhesive side of the transdermal system should be


applied to clean, dry, intact healthy skin

Press your Neupro Patch firmly with the palm of your


hand for 30 seconds, especially around the edges.
The warmth of your hand helps the adhesive on the
patch stick to your skin.
Make sure that your Neupro Patch is flat against your
skin.
There should be no bumps or folds in your Neupro
Patch.

The application site for Neupro

The application site for Neupro should be moved on a daily basis.


Neupro should not be applied to the same application site more than once
every 14 days.

Mechanism of Action
Neupro is a transdermal system that provides

continuous delivery of rotigotine, a nonergoline dopamine agonist, for 24 hours


following application to intact skin.
The precise mechanism of action of rotigotine
as a treatment for Restless Legs Syndrome is
unknown but is thought to be related to its
ability to stimulate dopamine receptors.

Pharmacokinetics
Metabolism of rotigotine occurs extensively by

conjugation and N-dealkylation


Rotigotine's primary route of clearance is
through excretion of urine
Approximately 11% of rotigotine is excreted in
the feces

Side Effects
Adverse events associated with the use of

Neupro for Restless Legs Syndrome may


include, but are not limited to, the following:
application site reactions- swelling, rash ,

redness
nausea
somnolence
headache

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION


Neupro contains a sulfite called sodium

metabisulfite. Sulfites can cause severe allergic


reactions that are life threatening to some people
who are sensitive to sulfites. People with asthma
are more sensitive to sulfites.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION


Neupro may make you fall asleep suddenly or

without warning while doing normal activities, such


as driving, which may result in accidents.
Drinking alcohol or taking other medicines that

cause drowsiness may increase your chances of


becoming sleepy while using Neupro.
Do not drive, use hazardous machinery, or do other

dangerous activities until you know how Neupro


affects you.
