Negatives of Globalization

What are the negative effects of

globalization?
1.

Developed nations have outsourced manufacturing

and white collar jobs.

2.

Globalization has led to exploitation of labor.

3.

Job insecurity.

4.

Terrorists have access to sophisticated weapons

enhancing their ability to inflict damage.

5.

Companies have set up industries causing pollution in

countries with poor regulation of pollution.

6.

Fast food chains like McDonalds and KFC are spreading

in the developing world.

Negatives cont.
7.

The benefits of globalization are not universal.

8.

Bad aspects of foreign cultures are affecting the

local cultures through TV and the Internet.

9.

Enemy nations can spread propaganda through

the Internet.

10.

Deadly diseases like HIV/AIDS are being spread by

travelers to the remotest corners of the globe.

11.

Local industries are being taken over by foreign

multinationals.

12.

Transnational corporations which were previously

restricted to commercial activities are increasingly
influencing political decisions.

What is being done to

stop the negative
effects of globalization?

What are the beneficial effects

of Globalization?

Improved Technology
Increases a countrys wealth with economic growth.
Jobs

Increases communication around the world and across

countries.
Decreases the size of the world.
Exposes people of the world to products from around
the world.
Globalization has rapidly improved the social and
economic status of women in the developing world.
The explanation is straightforward:

In a competitive, globalized world, the role of women becomes

ever more valuable. Cultures that exclude women from full
participation (e.g., Saudi Arabia) fall ever further behind.

Benefits cont.

Over the past 20 years, 200 million people have left

absolute poverty -- defined as living on the equivalent of
less than $1 a day.
Advances in medicine, improved public health policies,
and greater food supplies have lowered infant mortality
and lengthened life expectancy.
In developing countries in the 1950s, 178 children per every
1000 live births died before reaching their first birthday. By the
late 1990s, the infant mortality rate in these countries had
declined to 64 per 1000. Life expectancy increased from 44
years in 1960 to 59 years in 1999.

Child labor declines as a countrys income increases. As

trade promotes economic growth, globalization results
in less child labor over time.
In 1960, children made up 32 percent of the labor force in lowincome countries. Forty years later, following the massive
expansion in international trade, child labor in the same
countries had declined to 19 percent.

What are the negative effects of

globalization?
1.

2.

3.

4.
5.
6.

Developed nations have outsourced manufacturing and white collar jobs.

1. That means less jobs for their people. This has happened because
manufacturing work is outsourced to developing nations like China
where the cost of manufacturing goods and wages are lower.
Globalization has led to exploitation of labor.
1. Prisoners and child workers are used to work in inhumane conditions.
Safety standards are ignored to produce cheap goods.
Job insecurity.
1. Increased job competition has led to reduction in wages and
consequently lower standards of living.
Terrorists have access to sophisticated weapons enhancing their ability
to inflict damage.
Companies have set up industries causing pollution in countries with
poor regulation of pollution.
Fast food chains like McDonalds and KFC are spreading in the developing
world.
1. People are consuming more junk food from these joints which has an
adverse impact on their health.

Negatives cont.
1.

The benefits of globalization is not universal.

1. The rich are getting richer and the poor are becoming
poorer.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

7.
8.

Bad aspects of foreign cultures are affecting the local

cultures through TV and the Internet.
Enemy nations can spread propaganda through the
Internet.
Deadly diseases like HIV/AIDS are being spread by
travelers to the remotest corners of the globe.
Local industries are being taken over by foreign
multinationals.
The increase in prices has reduced the governments
ability to sustain social welfare schemes in
developed countries.
There is increase in human trafficking.
Transnational Companies and corporations which
were previously restricted to commercial activities
are increasingly influencing political decisions.
