Introduction
Launch of HSDPA brings downlink bitrate to a
new level. A theoretical peak DL rate of 14
Mbps is possible

To ensure that Uplink will not become a

bottleneck for future data services, 3GPP has

standardized a new technology called
Enhanced Uplink (EUL) in release 6

EUL is often referred as HSUPA to underline

the fact that it belongs to same family with
HSDPA. This technology is ofen called as
HSPA

Large Scheduling delays

Slow scheduling from RNC
Large Latency
Transmission time interval of

10/20/40/80 ms
RNC based retransmission in case
of errors

Limited UL data rate

Peak data rate limited to 384 kbps

Functionality
HSUPA has more in common with a R99 DCH than with HSDPA
3GPP terminology for HSUPA is Enhanced DCH (E-DCH)

Notes:
3GPP allows multi-code transmission for R99 DCH but in practise only 1 code is used
The HSDPA user plane channel cannot use soft handover, although the associated DCH may use soft
handover
RAS06 uses a 10 ms Transmission Time Interval (TTI) for HSUPA to improve coverage performance

HSUPA Features

Shorter TTI of 2 ms: In HSUPA both 10 ms and 2 ms TTI are

supported
A shorter TTI allows reduction in latency and thus increasing
the average and peak throughput

For a 10ms TTI UE, the peak data rate is limited to 2 Mbps
For a 2ms TTI UE, the peak data rate of 5.76 Mbps can be
achieved
