TOPIC 5 : PATTERNS OF BEHAVIOUR

1. Compare and contrast the
differences and similarities between
disruptive and non-disruptive behavior.

Disruptive Classroom Behavior

is defined as any behaviors that hamper the ability of instructors to teach or
students to learn.

Common examples of disruptive

behaviors include, but are not
limited

to:

Constant questions or interruptions which interfere with the

instructors presentation

Eating in class

Monopolizing classroom
discussions

Overt inattentiveness (e.g., sleeping or reading the paper in

class)

Failing to respect the rights of

other students to express their
viewpoints

Talking when the instructor or

others are speaking

Creating excessive noise

Entering the class late or leaving early

Poor personal hygiene (e.g., noticeably offensive body odor)

Students exhibiting these types of behaviors can expect a warning from the
instructor or
dismissal for the lesson in which the behavior occurs. Failure to correct such
behaviors
can result in dismissal from the course.

Non-disruptive behaviors
are minor irritants and merely motivational problems

The student may:

Quietly blend in while doing

nothing, doodling, or appearing
to work

Spend a lot of time looking

through things, desk, locker.
Say they are getting to the task
or are working on something
and produce few results

Quietly mumble, hum, or make slight sounds to self

Day dream, look out window, around the room, look past the
teacher, at other students, stare.

Play with things in desk, backpack, in folders.

Draw or do other tactile activities while lesson is being presented

if these behaviors are prolonged, repetitive, persistent and spread they may become
disruptive ( Charles, 2002; Levin & Nolan, 1991).

Both adverse effect on the quality of

teaching and learning as well as learning
environment.
Similarity between non disruptive and disruptive
behaviors.

Differences between non-disruptive and disruptive

behaviors
Non-disruptive behaviors

Disruptive behaviors
Overt misbehaviors (more open and
observable)

Levin & Nolan (1991;p.24) define

disruptive behavior as having the
following characteristics:

Interferes with the teaching act;

Covert misbehaviors (more passive)

Do not interfere with other pupils learning and teaching acts, or

threaten and intimidate others or damage school property.

Minor irritants as long as they are brief in duration

Interferes with the rights of others to

learn;

Psychologically and physically

unsafe; and

Destroys property.

Differences between non-disruptive and

disruptive behaviors
Non-disruptive behaviors

Disruptive behaviors
Include talking or otherwise
making noise, or coming in late
and walking showily up the aisle.

Lead to psychological harm to

others and crime or cause death.

Include sleeping (without snoring), reading, or slipping into the

back of the room late.

Does not lead to psychological harm to others and crime or cause

death.

Teachers need to employ effective motivational strategies to work

with these pupils individually in order to protect the classs rights
to learn in a safe learning environment.

Teachers need to:

Engage pupils academically and

socially

Set and maintain clear and

concise classroom rules and
procedures
