It was during July 2014 that Dilli Haat was thrown open to the public at Janakpuri. Just about half an hour
away from the busy, upmarket and poshlocationof city centres at West Delhi, Dilli Haat is a perfect
getaway.
Music is the central theme of the haat here. The primeattractionis the music library. If you spend some
time here, you will be transported tothe worldof rich Indian music through books and CDs. If you are
music lover, you will be thrilled to discover all kinds of old and new Indian musical instruments and
otherartefactsrelated to music, in the museum nearby the library.
Dilli Haat Janakpuri is also famous for its live cultural performances. There is a huge amphitheater here
which hosts lovely performances all through the year. This place canaccommodate820 people ata
time, whereas the AC auditorium can seat around 800 people at any given point of time. This auditorium
is highly impressive as it is built using state-of-the-art technology. Currently, this is the biggest haat in
West Delhi. One can find a massive hall in the haat, which is the venue forexhibitions, seminars, fairs,
events, conferences and the like.
This place is a definite haven for shopaholics as there are close to 46 shops that are air-conditioned, 74
shops that situated on the open platforms and close to 100 craft stalls housing a variety of goods. The
food court where people throng in large numbers is fully air-conditioned and houses at least 30 food
outlets that serve Indian and international cuisines. During summers, when Delhi gets unbearably hot,
this place is sheer paradise.
All efforts havebeen takento ensure that the Janakpuri Delhi Haat takes utmost care of its environment
and guests. Visitors who are differently abled too are quite comfortable here, as there are escalators, lifts
and ramps to get around the place. There is ample parking space here and all eco- friendly features like
harvesting rain water and efficienttreatmentof sewagetreatmentadd to its appeal.

Archohm is popular for developing a bouquet of self-sufficient facilities and functions that lend each other a certain support
system. Architect Sourabh Gupta shares the uniqueness of their dream project Dillihaat in Janakpuri.
Delhi, being the national capital region, has been host to the development of various cultural hubs. Also, the historic Delhi
has been always a prominent cultural centre. Hence, cultural centres have always been important to this city. A new
addition to this already thriving cultural jamboree was Dilli Haat a huge success from its inception at INA near AIIMS in
1994. This was followed by Dilli Haat at Pitampura in north central Delhi and now another Haat at Janakpuri in west Delhi.
Socio-economic impacts
The project attempts to empower artisans, bringing art and craft from the villages to the city with no middle men to ensure
authenticity and profitability.
Relishing challenges
Designing Dilli Haat was a challenge to relish because of the huge popularity of the enterprise. It was a competition entry
called by Delhi Tourism. The construction began in August 2011 and is expected to complete in February 2014.
The project comprises of two adjacent sites, which are a part of a huge green belt.
Dilli Haat occupies the larger 6-acre site whereas the smaller site has a proposal for a youth hostel or hotel and parking
facilities.
The site is located in the densely populated residential area of Janakpuri. It is very well connected by public transport,
especially after the introduction of the new metro link. For outstation visitors, railway and air connections are quite
convenient too. It was a great opportunity to develop Haat in west Delhi as it does not enjoy adequate centres of this kind;
the main melting pots being south and central Delhi.
Here was a chance to create another nucleus around which cultural life in west Delhi could thrive. At the same time, it was
a challenge to retain or replenish the green cover, while taking up extensive building work.
Archohm, taking cognizance of all the requirements, so as to make the Haat functionally viable program, decided to give a
music theme to the centre. The lack of any centre dedicated to music came glaring while doing research, and soon the
theme of haat beat gathered momentum.

DILLI HAAT

DELHI GOT ITS THIRD DILLI HAAT ON SUNDAY AT JANAKPURI. SPREAD OVER 9.8 ACRES, THE JANKAPURI DELHI
HAAT, WHICH WILL HOST ART EXHIBITIONS AND STALLS FROM CRAFTSMEN FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, IS
BIGGER THAN THE EXISTING TWO DILLI HAATS AT INA AND PITAMPURA. IT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED BY THE
DELHI TOURISM AT A COST OF RS.120 CRORE.
ON SUNDAY, THE HAAT WAS INAUGURATED BY PARVESH SAHIB SINGH, MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FROM WEST
DELHI. THIS NEW VENUE WILL BE SHOWCASING THE COUNTRYS CRAFT AND CULTURAL TRADITION AND WILL
BE AN OPEN AIR SHOPPERS PARADISE, WHICH WILL BE A ONE-STOP DESTINATION FOR ART, CRAFT, AND
MUSIC AND FOOD LOVERS, SAID MR. SINGH. HE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY MEMBER OF LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY
JAGDISH MUKHI, COUNCILLOR RAJNI MAMTANI, AND DELHI GOVERNMENT SECRETARY (TOURISM) RINKU
DHUGGA.
DR. MUKHI SAID JANAKPURI DILLI HAAT IS ONE OF THE FINEST COMPLEXES IN WEST DELHI AND WILL BE
KNOWN AS A CULTURAL HUB OF THE CITY SHORTLY.
IT HAS A PROVISION OF 100 CRAFT STALLS, 74 OPEN-PLATFORM SHOPS AND 46 SHOPS. IT WILL HAVE 14
FOOD STALLS WITH VARIETIES OF FOOD FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND 15 FOOD STALLS SERVING
CUISINES FROM AROUND THE WORLD.
THE CULTURAL HUB INCLUDES A 960-SQ M EXPOSITION HALL, AN A.C. AUDITORIUM WITH A CAPACITY OF 800
SEATS AND AN AMPHITHEATRE WITH A CAPACITY OF 820 SEATS FOR CULTURAL EVENTS. ADDITIONALLY, THE
HAAT HAS AN 80-BED DORMITORY AND WILL HAVE 24X7 POWER BACK UP.
THE NEW HAAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED WITH A NUMBER OF ECO-FRIENDLY FEATURES AND IS FULLY
DIFFERENTLY-ABLED FRIENDLY. THE NEAREST METRO STATION TO REACH DILLI HAAT JANAKPURI IS TILAK
NAGAR OR JANAKPURI METRO STATION. THE TICKET IS PRICED AT RS.10 (ADULTS) AND ENTRY FOR CHILDREN
(BELOW 12 YEARS) IS FREE. IT WILL REMAIN OPEN FROM 11 A.M. TO 10 P.M.

 The layout
Outdoor shops with roofing canopies and craft shops to hold artisans workshops are integral to the Dilli Haat theme.
Air-conditioned shops were added to make it a more viable shopping experience. There is also a childrens play area
tucked into a small green patch. The food court with basement parking facilities ties it all together to sustain as an
enterprise. Like a well-crafted movie, the strength of this project is that the plot is strong, and the basic idea is
immersed well in every aspect extensively. The site plan is knit together efficiently. Free-flowing open spaces bind
various activities on two levels. The main pedestrian and vehicular entries are from a busy street. There is a separate
service entry and a couple of special entry points. A large open space takes the visitor through a frisking area to
another pocket that leads to the huge central plaza formed by meandering air-conditioned shops and the exposition
halls. One can also take the open pedestrian ramp to reach the terrace lined by canopy shops. From the frisking area,
there are direct access points to the caf, surface and basement parking and banquet greens. The central plaza
culminates to the auditorium and the craft-shops cluster, the most popular activity which clusters located at the rear
end to enable the visitor to walk through the entire Haat. Another frisking area is located near these clusters as there
is a strong possibility of craft shops to become the predominant function. The four 8-metre high towers are
interspersed along the site. Designed to look like huge bamboo baskets, they are two-storied buildings with a rooftop
canopy designed for outdoor activities. Closer to the entry, one basket houses the information centre, while the other
forms a caf. Wander more into the interiors of the site and the baskets house a music centre and a museum. The
music centre will not just avail sale of all genres of rare classics, musical instruments but provides ample outdoor
space and a small amphitheatre to take care of interactive functions.
The exposition halls are three linear vaults of ascending widths in plan, forming one large space that can be divided
into three as required. Colourful flowering creepers that soften the scale and help temperature control further cover
the steel sheeting on top. The food court will house 48 stalls from different places and celebrate the taste of India.
The two-storied air-conditioned space is well supported with individual service courts for every stall, in turn opening
into a larger service yard connected with separate access. The front wall of the food court, visible from the main
access road, holds the huge signage keeping those interested updated on the happening inside.

 A state-of-the-art auditorium with 800-seating capacity also forms an amphitheatre on top. The green, paved amphitheatre
instantly reduces the huge mass of the auditorium and at the same time helps retain the green cover, helping in heat
control.
Also, covered on top by canopied shops they make a bustling activity space lit up by shop signage and street sculptures.
Circularly planned 100 craft shops are arranged in clusters of five-six, each forming a bazaar. These are built in the most
natural stone masonry, covered with the most technologically advance tensile canopies. The clusters are connected with
small green patches and paved allies, completing the village scene. The rear boundary wall is lined with informal platform
shops overlooking this village.
Fresh outlook
Breaking free of the convention look and feel of its other two counterparts with their brick vocabulary, Dilli Haat, Janakpuri
takes a fresh look at the material palette as demanded by the multifaceted program that it houses. The material spectrum is
an eclectic mix of modern and traditional. Using the timeless red Agra stone, kota stone, slate and the local Delhi quartz
stone masonry on facades and landscapes, it sets a neat
and natural typology to this predominantly green complex.
The one material that is being celebrated with its extensive usage is bamboo; structures for shading, screens for baskets
and food court, sculptures for street furniture on one side and the natural growing ones as soft scapes of boundary
plantations and accent trees on the other.

Indigenous stones and plants coupled with contemporary mediums of steel and tensile canopies juxtapose themselves aptly.
This traditional Haat of contemporary times is a rich, earthy play of colour and texture, and one can experience intimate

A sprawling Exposition Hall spreading over 960 Sqm. has been set up at DilliHaat, Janakpuri where
various exhibitions, seminars, events etc takes place. The outer walls of the exposition halls will be
covered by creepers which will provide a green roof top.

This new Dilli Haat will be fully equipped with an A.C Auditorium which has a capacity of 800 seats.
This auditorium will have the latest technology and equipments and will be the biggest modern
auditorium in West Delhi.

An Amphitheatre having 820 seat capacities is another special feature at the Haat which not only
encourages art and culture but is also a one stop destination for various cultural events.

Some special features of the Haat are - A huge dormitory with 80 beds ,5 Nos. of public toilets with
energy efficient fittings and light fixtures, 24 x 7 Power back up, Proper sewage treatment plant,
water treatment plant, rain water harvesting and 3 garbage dumping spaces have also been
constructed to keep the Haat clean and eco friendly.

The new Dilli Haat has been developed with a number of eco-friendly features and is fully disabledfriendly. Lifts, ramps and escalators are installed for the convenience of differently-abled persons
and senior citizens.
Keeping in mind the security of the general public, CCTV cameras have been installed at the venue
which provides proper surveillance. There are provisions of parking at the basement and surface
area. More than 240 cars, 3 buses can be parked at the surface area and almost 55 cars and 120
two wheeler can be parked at the basement parking area.
The market is built on musical theme such that the decorative structures are curved in shape.
Bamboos are used in decoration.

Design intentions
Haat Beat was the starting point to this design competition entry in 2005. Delhi Tourism and Transportation
Development Corporation had invited entries for a Dilli Haat in Janakpuri - a massive site with a large residential
audience, in a part of Delhi that had very few places to go out to. DTTDC has promoted music all across Delhi with its
concerts and other initiatives. The idea was to give them a home for playful music and give these homes a place to play
with music. This was the underlying layer that bonded the overall program of formal and informal shops to sell crafts and
celebrate culture; toinject a new life into this part of Delhi and be its rhythmic heart beat.
Technical data

The site was a large six-acre northwest facing contiguous piecethat turnssoutheast towards the
end. The plot is bound by the main bus terminus on one side, the Tihar jail (a national prison)
greens on the other side and a large commercial road in the front. The complex is planned with
two entrances; a primary face with vehicular and pedestrian zones and a secondary rearentry
for pedestrians into the craft-only zone.
The final functionality found an indoor, well-equipped, 800- capacity auditorium for formal
concerts and an informal similar capacity open-airamphitheater that works simultaneously with
independent spaces and support services. A multipurpose, multi-scaled exposition hall for
exhibitions and seminars is proposed. A set of four baskets houses a music museum, a music
store and music workshop space along with tourism offices and cafes. A large, air-conditioned
food court extends into shaded courtyards and expansive greens for the basic need of spill
overs. Formal, informal and open shop spaces are created to bring in the required sensitive
adaptations of malls, markets and bazaars into this haat. An independent fine dining with an
extended banquet facility is created to reinforce the business plan of this complex cultural
complex. A state-of-the-art auditorium that canhold large music concerts, an amphitheatre, a
music centerfor sales and exhibition of musical instruments along with inviting exuberant

RELISHING CHALLENGES
DESIGNING DILLI HAAT WAS A CHALLENGE TO RELISH BECAUSE OF THE HUGE POPULARITY OF THE ENTERPRISE. IT WAS A
COMPETITION ENTRY CALLED BY DELHI TOURISM.

HERE WAS A CHANCE TO CREATE ANOTHER NUCLEUS AROUND WHICH CULTURAL LIFE IN WEST DELHI COULD THRIVE. AT
THE SAME TIME, IT WAS A CHALLENGE TO RETAIN OR REPLENISH THE GREEN COVER, WHILE TAKING UP EXTENSIVE
BUILDING WORK.
ARCHOHM, TAKING COGNIZANCE OF ALL THE REQUIREMENTS, SO AS TO MAKE THE HAAT FUNCTIONALLY VIABLE PROGRAM,
DECIDED TO GIVE A MUSIC THEME TO THE CENTRE. THE LACK OF ANY CENTRE DEDICATED TO MUSIC CAME GLARING
WHILE DOING RESEARCH, AND SOON THE THEME OF HAAT BEAT GATHERED MOMENTUM.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT CHALLENGE WAS TO DESIGN THIS HAAT DIFFERENTLY IN ALL ASPECTS, BRING SOMETHING
REFRESHING YET IN A OLD WAY REMAIN CONNECTED TO THE CONCEPT OF DELHI HAAT.

The four 8-metre high towers are interspersed along

the site. Designed to look like huge bamboo baskets,
they are two-storied buildings with a rooftop canopy
designed for outdoor activities. Closer to the entry,
one basket houses the information centre, while
the other forms a caf.
Wander more into the interiors of the site and the
baskets house a music centre and a museum.
The music centre will not just avail sale of all genres
of rare classics, musical instruments but provides
ample outdoor space and a small amphitheatre to
take care of interactive functions,
Extensively cladded with bamboo which acts as
screen for the round shaped building, apart from
providing a traditional look, mixing well with the
stone cladded surrounding into nature.
