Energy
Energy is an Ability of system to perform work
Different Forms of
Energy are;
Kinetic Energy: Moving water
Potential Energy: Oil in barrel
Thermal Energy: Heat of an object
Chemical Energy: Food when it is cooked
Electrical Energy: Electric Stove
Sound Energy: Airplane taking off

Audit
Audit means; conducting an official inspection of (a
company or its accounts).
Definition
Auditing is defined as a systematic and independent
examination of data, statements, records, operations and
performances (financial or otherwise) of an enterprise for
a stated purpose. In any auditing the auditor perceives and
recognizes the propositions before him/her for
examination, collects evidence, evaluates the same and on
this basis formulates his/her judgment which is
communicated through his/her audit report.

Energy Audit
Definition as per Energy Conservation
Act, 2001, the verification, monitoring
and analysis of use of energy including
submission of technical report
containing recommendations for
improving energy efficiency with cost
benefit analysis and an action plan to
reduce energy consumption.

Why the need for energy Audit ?

The three top operating expenses are energy (both
electrical and thermal), labour and materials.
Energy would emerge as a top ranker for cost
reduction
Primary objective of Energy Audit is to determine
ways to reduce energy consumption per unit of
product output or to lower operating costs
Energy Audit provides a bench-mark (Reference
point) for managing energy in the organization

Areas of Energy Audit

Subject of energy consumption analysis are energy resources
consumed in the industrial areas, i.e.

Natural gas
Steam
Coal
Wood, wood chips/pellets
Fuels (petrol, oil, propane-butane).....

Areas of Energy Audit

Thermal -technical protection of buildings,
Heating systems
Hot water preparation,
Ventilation systems and air-conditioning (buildings and
technology)
Electric appliances (administrative and technological incl.
electrical connection, transformation, distribution network, el.
switchboards, el. compensation)
Gas or other energy resources consuming appliances (furnaces,
cleaning devices,..)
Indoor/outdoor lighting

Energy Wastage

Not just what goes in bin is counted as waste

Case Study-(General Motors)

We strive to reduce emissions & petroleum
dependence by being more energy efficient
Reduction in energy use 28% to 10% within 8 years
Spain facility was the worlds largest industrial rooftop
solar installation
Reduction in CO2 from 28% to 7% within 8 years
Leading user of renewable energy in manufacturing
sector Solar Champion
Half of electricity at California distribution center is
powered by sun

projects

Energy Audit - Check List

Are there areas that have excessive or unneeded
lighting?
Are you making effective use of available lighting,
such as natural sunlight?
Filters to be checked and replaced when dirty during
high usage
100 watt bulb to be replaced with LED or CFL bulbs
Make sure all electronics & appliances are plugged in
only if they are in use
Energy star rated electronics & appliance for your next
purchase
Refrigerator unit to be replaced if older than 10 years
