MAGAZINE
Construction of
character
USE- We used the forms and conventions of the horror genre through the choice of electric sheep
magazine. We had Daniel ( our actor) to model the same facial expression as we wanted our media
magazine to fit in with those that have already been produce, in order to look as though electric sheep
have produce it themselves. We used the this particular imagery as we felt as though the audience are
eventually exposed to the man in the mask, however not fully, due to the fact that he scrunching up his
face and closing his eye, the audience are unable to get a full view of his face because of this expression
and the use of shot type. This extreme close-up makes the audience unable to get a full view of his figure.
This therefore conforms to the codes and conventions of the horror genre.
DEVELOP The use of facial expression was extremely significant in developing the codes and conventions
of the horror genre. The audience are unable to see visually all his feature. We told our actor Daniel to do
this in order to give a sense the viewer that he is trying to hide his true identity, it almost has a large
connection to he poster and the film trailer, as it almost looks as though he is either smug at what he has
done (frantically) or ashamed has be cannot look them in the eye. In this respect we have been able to
develop codes and conventions of the horror genre.
DEVELOP In addition we also wanted to differ from the inspiration we used by getting our actor to close his
mouth while he was squinting, this highlights that he is half smiling and therefore is extremely smug,
whereas the one we took inspiration from looked as though the man was in pain, which is not what we
wanted to portray. Therefore developed this.
USE -An aspect that we thought was effective in the construction of character was the facial expression he
is holding gives a sense of his characteristic and personality and therefore the audience are able to gain a
hint of what our actor is like just by looking at the image, and therefore would be more likely to read our
magazine. In addition it is also very distinct expression which is very unique compared to other film
magazines.
POSTER
Construction of
character
USE- The construction of character within the poster conforms to the codes and
conventions of the horror genre through the use of positioning, the audience are unable to
see fully the clowns face, and therefore this gives a sense of the unknown as his identity
is hidden. The viewer feels slightly uncomfortable in the fact the clown is directly looing at
the viewer. This again creates a eerie feel, conforming the conventions of the horror
genre.
USE-The colouring of the clown is also significant, we used the paint tool in order to make
it stand prominently, with a jet black back group, this creates a cartoon effect which is
something that we took inspiration from the film Annabelle which also is positioned so
only half the face is shown, and through the use of deep, dark colours is given a bolder
effect. This is more sinister, and the audience are aware that this poster is conforming to
the horror genre . This creates fear amongst the viewer, which is initially what we wanted
to achieve.
Another aspect that needs to be considered when applying to the forms and conventions
of the horror genre is the representation if the clown if the first taste of the film the viewer
will receive. Based among the post, therefore within the way we have shown the villain
sets off a feeling of fight for the audience within the colouring and the positioning, the
audience now have high expectations for the formation of the character within the film
The Final Plea
Editing
USE- During evaluating horror posters, we particularly liked the format of the film poster
Anabelle that effectively structured. Therefore when editing our poster we conformed to
the codes and conventions by cropping the image on the tools on Photoshop Adobe and
focused on the positioning of the clown. With films that we looked at such as Annabelle
and The Purge they placed the masked villain off centre to give a sense of the unknown
as the viewer is unable to fully see their face, this uses aspects of the horror genre
effectively as the audience are more drawn to the imagery. In addition it also makes over
elements that are significant also in focus, for example the titling, tag line and critical
view.
CHALLENGE- A way in which we challenged the forms and conventions within the poster,
instead of using the sharpness tools and putting up the lux we used the pain brush tool
instead. When analysing many horror we notice the imagery was more sharp rather than
bold. However we wanted to give off a cartoon effect, we did this by matching the colours
on the mask and colouring over each section, this was in order for the mask to be more
prominent, in addition we did not want the mask to look like a photograph, rather a
strongly features mask, that has a cartoon effect which gives a sinister feel.
We applied to the codes and convention by using a black background. By doing this the
main title stood out, as well as the additionally information on it.
Titling
USE- When considering our position of our main title, we acknowledged that within
typical horror posters the titling was normally in the centre, in order to be the main
focus. Therefore after considerable amount of research we decided to also place our
main titling with the middle of the poster, and the main image be off centre and more
to the side. In addition we also enlarged to take it a main focus, this is to draw
attention of the audience as they will recognise the name The Final Plea. Therefore
we have used codes and conventions.
USE- Another factor that we considered was also the colouring of the shots, we didnt
want to use dark colours and this would barely be noticeable against the black
background. And therefore we used the colouring of a pale grey and a red. This are
effective colours as they are usually associated with the horror genre. For example
red is symbolic of blood or danger. This therefore conforms to the codes and
conventions of the horror genre. In addition we used the colouring of the light grey in
order to stand out effectively against the back background. This was so the audience
are particularly drawn towards the main titling of The Final Plea. We then placed out
tag line text about the title, making it allot smaller reading how far would you got to
protect your family ? Therefore we have once again used this code and convention.
