Ovation SLS 1508 Logic Solver

The Ovation SLS 1508 Logic Solver is packaged in a 2-wide I/O footprint. SIS terminal
blocks, situated anywhere on I/O backplanes, are placed starting with the odd numbered
slots. Simplex requires two slots and Redundant requires four slots on the I/O carrier.
24VDC power for the I/O and CPU is derived from a dedicated connector; not bussed
field power. Controller or Bussed power failure has no effect on Logic Solvers.

Note: It is recommended that the SLS, Ovation controller and I/O use
separate power supplies.

Ovation SLS 1508 Redundant Logic Solver

In some cases additional availability is required and , in such cases, a redundant logic
solver may be installed. Both logic solvers take their input data, and send their output
data, through a single set of terminals that is wired to the field devices.
In a redundant architecture the two logic solvers work in parallel it is not a master/slave
arrangement. Both logic solvers read the same input data and write the same outputs all
of the time. The exact methodology is proprietary and under patent.
Active Logic Solver
One of the logic solvers is designated the active logic solver; this is the one of the pair
that makes data available to the Railbus. Both logic solvers write this data to the field
devices.

Ovation SLS 1508 Redundant Logic Solver

Communications with SISnet
Both logic solvers publish all their data onto the SISnet all the time. They also listen for
all data on the SISnet. This allows the logic solvers to monitor their own capability to do
so and also that of their redundant partner.
Switchovers and Diagnostics
Should either logic solver fail, there will be no bump in the signal as the other solver
assumes complete control. This approach of two logic solvers working parallel gives a
significant advantage in that, should one fail, the other does not have to detect the fault
and assume control. It simply continues to work exactly as it was before.
Diagnostics run within all logic solvers all of the time, with up to twenty diagnostic
cycles per second. Some diagnostics are by reference and some are by comparison.

Digital Input 12 VDC Dry Contact

The Digital Input channels have line fault detection to detect open or short circuits in
field wiring. To use this capability you must:
Enable line fault detection on a channel-by-channel basis when you configure the
channels.
Connect the dry contact to a 12K external resistor in parallel (for open circuit
detection) and a 2.4K resistor in series (for short circuit detection).
Note1: Line fault detection is built into
NAMUR sensors. Do not use external
resistors with NAMUR sensors; however,
you must enable line fault detection in your
configuration when using NAMUR sensors.
Note2: Emersons End of Line Resistance
Module (KJ2231X1-EC1) provides this
function. The module connects to the Digital
Input channel and to a field contact.

Dual Cable Extenders

A dual cable extender provides railbus and 12VDC power extension between two
horizontal carriers. Functionally, a dual cable extender replaces the existing Local bus
cable extender and can also be used for the new SIS system.
A dual cable extender provides two BNC connections for peer-to-peer communications.
Peer-to-peer extender cables extend the peer-to-peer bus between SLSs on different
carriers. The 2-channel peer-to-peer bus must be terminated at both ends. Terminated onewide carriers terminate the peer-to-peer bus at the final dual right extender. The other end
is terminated internally on the two-wide power controller carrier.
There are two cable extenders; the Dual Right Extender and the Dual Left Extender. The
left extender is only needed when extending between two or more I/O carriers.
Note: The dual right extender must be installed and terminated even if you are using only
one 8-wide I/O carrier.

SISNet Repeaters Fiber-Optic Rings

SISNet Repeaters connected to one Ovation controller communicate with SISNet
Repeaters connected to a different controller over a fiber-optic ring. A local SISNet
Repeater collects locally-generated global messages into a single message and sends it to
the SISNet Repeater in the ring. Immediately upon receipt of a message, the receiving
SISNet Repeater forwards the message to the next SISNet Repeater in the ring. A global
message is forwarded around the ring once. The A SISNet Repeaters form one fiber-optic
ring and B form another ring.
The fiber-optic ring is a multimode fiber cable, maximum distance between SISNet
Repeaters is 2km.
Each SISNet Repeater requires a separate 24 VDC supply.

SISNet Repeaters Fiber-Optic Rings

Fiber-Optic Ring Connection Recommendations
Wire the two fiber-optic rings in the opposite direction. Do it this way for
maximum availability.
The example above displays four separate cabinets with SISNet Repeaters.

Ring A is wired from CAB1 to CAB2 to CAB3 to CAB4 to CAB1, completing the
fiber-optic ring.

Ring B is wired just opposite from CAB1 to CAB4 to CAB3 to CAB2 to CAB1,
completing the fiber-optic ring.

Scenario
Assume CAB3 looses all power and the SISNet Repeaters are down. Wiring the fiberoptics in opposite directions give the availability of the other CABs to communicate to
each other across the fiber-optics. If CAB2 sends data to CAB1 or CAB4 it has a path
using RING B.

SISNet Repeaters and Distance Extenders

The example above shows a remote peer ring in which all nodes are remote. Again, node
refers to a SISNet Repeater pair and SISNet Distance Extender pair. This remote peer
ring uses a counter-rotation topology in which the left SISNet Repeaters are connected
clockwise and the right SISNet Repeaters are connected counterclockwise.
Multi-Mode Fiber Optic Conversion Cable The conversion cable has an ST style
connector on the end connected to the SISNet Repeaters and SC style connector on
the end that connects to the Distance Extenders for both TxD and RxD.
Single-Mode Fiber Optic Cable The Single-Mode fiber cable has an LC style
connector on both ends of the cable that plug into the Distance Extenders for both
TxD and RxD.

Power 12VDC from Ovation System Supply is sued by SDS and NOT used by
any SLSs or SISNet Repeaters.

Railbus Communication lines used by SDS for Primary and Secondary Ethernet
connections to the Ovation LAN through router. Ethernet communications are for
configuration downloads and monitoring only; not safety-related functions.

Peer-to-Peer A 1 channel of SLS to SLS communication.

Peer-to-Peer B 1 channel of SLS to SLS communication.
