female reproductive system

and its major parts.

Review
What are the parts of the male
reproductive system?
What are produced in the testes?
What sac protects the testes?
Where is the sperm produced in the
testes stored?

Motivation
How do you differentiate
a boy from a girl?

The female reproductive system functions

to produce female gametes called ovum.
The main female reproductive organs
include:
(a) ovary
(b) uterus
(c) Fallopian tube
(d) vagina
(e) cervix

Figure below shows the main parts of the

male reproductive system.

The ovaries are

located in the left
and right lower
abdomen. Ovaries
produce eggs as
well as hormones
like estrogen and
progesterone.

The fallopian
tubes are the
thin, soft tubes
that extend from
the uterus to the
ovaries. During
ovulation, an
ovary releases
an egg into the
fallopian tube
next to it.

Also called the

womb, the uterus
is a hollow, pearshaped organ with
a muscular wall
and a lining. The
uterus expands
many time in size
during pregnancy
to hold the
growing fetus.

The cervix is the

lower portion of
the uterus that
opens into the
vagina. During
labor, the cervix
dilates (expands)
to about 4 inches
in diameter.

The vagina is the

tube-like organ
that connects the
uterus to the
outside of the
body. The birth
of a baby follows
its path.

The vagina is the

tube-like
structure that

outside of the
body. The birth

The urethra is
the tube-like
structure that
carries urine out
of the body.

The clitoris is
the small
sensory organ
located just
above the
vagina.

The labia
minora are the
two inner flaps of
tissue, just inside
the labia majora,
that surround the
opening of the
vagina.

The labia
majora are the
two outer flaps
of tissue that
surround the
labia minora
and vagina.

The anus is the

opening between
the buttocks
where feces
leave the body
