 Direct objects
 Verbs can be followed by direct
objects.
 A direct object is the person or
thing receiving the action.

 Rafaela pone la mesa.

Rafaela sets the table.
Sets what? = The table!!
 What’s the direct object in the
following statement?

 Siempre pido la sopa.

Direct object pronouns (DOPs)
 Usedirect object pronouns to avoid
repeating the same noun over and
over again.

 DOPsmust match in gender and

number with the nouns they stand
for.

Singular lo him, it la her, it

Plural los them las them

¿Quién prepara los sándwiches?

Yo los preparo.
 DOP placement
 DOPs go before the conjugate verb.
 If there’s an infinite in the sentence,
the pronouns go before the
conjugated verb OR are attached
to the end of the infinitive.
¿Quién va a preparar los sándwiches?
Yo los voy a preparar.
Yo voy a prepararlos.

underline the noun it refers to.
1. La torta está deliciosa. La quiero probar.
2. Uds. piden espinacas. No las pueden
preparar en casa.

Affirmative informal commands
 To tell someone you address as tú to
do something
 Examples

– Friends
– Siblings
– Classmates
– Cousins
– Nieces and nephews
 Forming affirmative informal
commands
 Write the infinitive verb
 Take tú form of verb (stem-changers too)
 Drop the ‘s’

Order a chicken sandwich.

Pedir = to ask for/order
Pides = tú form
Pide = tú command.
Pide un sándwich de pollo.

Affirmative informal commands with
pronouns
 You already know that DOPs go immediately
before the conjugated verb or can be attached to
an infinitive.

 When you have a pronoun and

affirmative command, you attach
the pronoun to the end of the verb.
 Add an accent to the stressed vowel
of the verb if it’s 3+ syllables.
 Ej: Aff. commands with pronouns
 ¿Preparo la carne?
 Sí, prepárala.

 ¿Pongo los vasos en la mesa?

 Sí, ponlos allí.

which thing it refers to.
