Project I Microdialysis
Evaluating the Effects of Pressure Garments
on Cellular Communication in Scars

This project will test the theory that hypertrophic scarring

is partially caused by fibrosis after lymphedema
This study uses micro-technology in the form of a
microdialysis to identify cytokines in scars before and after
pressure therapy (Based on the principle of equilibration of
body fluids and molecules across membranes)
A small catheter with defined pore sizes that exchange
body fluids and molecules will be used
Costs: $1200 each x2 per patient per visit

Each test costs between $30 and $130 x10 cytokine tests
Total cost estimate $250,000

Project II - Cellutome

The goal of this project will be nothing less than

demonstrating for 2nd degree burns, healing can
occur with no visible scarring including pigmentation
and structure
To achieve this milestone, the researchers will be
transplanting mylanocytes into burn wounds using
blister graphing
A new cellutome machine is being developed for
burn survivors by KCI
Total estimated cost for this study is $120,000

In this project, an IPL (Intense Pulsed

Light) laser will be used to treat
discolored pigmentation and hyperpigmentation in scars
The goal is to improve outcomes using
IPL laser technology
