What is ICT?
an umbrella term that includes any communication
device or application, encompassing:
- radio
- television
- cellular phones
- computer
- network hardware and software
- satellite systems
- the various services and applications associated
(videoconferencing and distance learning)

Computer Assisted Language

Learning (CALL)
the utilization of ICT in language learning
to improve efficiency and effectiveness of
learning that can improve the quality
of understanding and mastery of the
language studied.

Interactive multimedia

ICT tools in language

context

Computer
Audio devices
Internet
Television
Telephone
Mobile gadget
Social interface
Interactive whiteboard

Interactive multimedia
the integration of digital media including
combinations of electronic text, graphics, moving
images, and sound, into a structured digital
computerized environment that allows people to
interact with the data for appropriate purposes.

Social interface
provides facility that enables an interaction
between human and computer.
serves as the milestone of the recent
development of interactive multimedia, audiographic computer teleconference, and
interactive television via satellite (National
Broadband of Employment, Education and
Training, 1993:5).

Interactive whiteboard
IWB, is a large interactive display (such as
a touch screen monitor) which is
connected to a computer and projector. A
projector projects the computers desktop
onto the boards surface, where users
control the computer using a pen, finger or
other devices.

Television

7 ways in which ICT used in

language learning

1. Presentation
. E.g : text-based materials, audio-video needs to
be presented to the learners.
. Presentation helps learners in understanding the
learning material well.
2. Practice
. Some of different exercises types are possible to
be provided with ICT, incorporating the
presentation stimuli in varying combinations of
text, audio and video format.
. Offers the possibility of the analyzing learners
responses with appropriate feedback.(Hartoyo,
2012:40)

3. Authoring
Teacher can either purchase ready-made
materials or create their own exercise materials
using a variety of authoring tools based on
Hartoyo (2012:40).
4. Computer-Aided Assessment (CAA)
Is used to testing and assessing students
understanding after learning some courses.

5. Publishing
to help them publish their work in these ways:
Word processors and Desk Top Publishing
(DTP) software
Doing audio recording and editing tools to record
interview, discussions, learning material and etc
Using digital camera and camcorder to record
presentations, drama, role play, and so on
Power point can be used as the medium to
publish presentations
Web pages using web authoring tools

6. Communications
Some ICT tools which can be used as the medium
of information are:
1) Email, which allows language learners to
communicate with web pals in other countries
2) Tandem learning
3) Computer mediated discussion
4) Web-based learning environment
5) Audio conferencing
6) Video Conferencing

7. Simulations
act as a stimulus which generates analysis,
critical thinking, discussion and writing.
Examples of language learning tasks which
simulate real world tasks are :
1) Web Quest
2) Action Mazes
3) Adventure games
4) Sunpower
5) Expodisc
6) Real-life simulations
7) Video conference

Advantages
gaining students interest in presenting their
ideas and responding to their classmates ideas,
allowing effective peer feedback,
giving positive interactivity within the teaching
and learning,
motivating students to apply knowledge in any
content area to a writing task,
engaging students in different projects,

increasing student engagement with the

language,
allowing the utilization of new technology to
communicate and collaborate in an educational
context,
providing a platform for active and meaningful
learning to occur,
developing independent work habits,
improving learners vocabulary knowledge,
allowing user collaboration and the publishing of
work such as writing.

Disadvantages
the use of computer technology could cause the
lackadaisical attitude among students whereby
they will not take their work seriously.
the students reading skills developed from
scrolling the computer screen could lead to an
accelerated but superficial, inaccurate
understanding of the content.
The teacher must have control at all times on
the navigation of students during school hours.
Not all websites are reliable or acceptable.

WEAKNESSES

1) Not affordable to all students

2) Decreases interaction among
students
3)Does not promote physical activities
4) Costly enough for programmes/
teachers
5)would be useless in the hand of not
creative teachers.

Ways to overcome
1) Teacher can use only one computer but can include
participations of everyone in class. ( shared reading
activity)
2) Group work activities. ( project that maximise the
usage of ICT)
3) Alternate the usage of ICT and physical activities in
schedule.
4) Use free ICT programmes and varied those into
interesting activities.
5) Teacher can find more interesting activities in the
internet to create varieties of activities in class.

Strengths
1) Language learning can be conducted without
being accompanied by a real teacher.
2) Good medium to help students learn in an
easier and interesting way.
3) Teacher can create various activities from the
usage of ICT.
4) Enhance students creativity and motivation in
learning English.
5) To develop students skills holistically through
the usage of ICT.

As Hartoyo (2008) stated in his book, a

computer is a tool and medium that
facilitates people in learning a language,
although the effectiveness of learning
depends totally on the users.
