MAGNETISM
KRISTINE D. PABICO
SST III
Lucena City National High School

ACTIVITY 1 MAGNETIC
FIELD MAPPING
Materials: Bar Magnets
Iron Fillings
U shaped Magnets
Paper and Marker
Procedures:
1. Place the magnets as shown below:
2. Pour Iron fillings around the magnet.
3. Gently tap the table until a clear pattern is
formed.
4. Draw your Observations.

PROCESSING activity 1
1. Compare the magnetic field
patterns for different set ups.
2. What do the magnetic field
patterns, indicate about the
strength of the magnets?
3. What can you say about the
magnetic field of a magnet?

ACTIVITY 2 CURRENT
CARRYING WIRE
Materials:
Dry Cells
6 in Solid Wire #14

Magnetic Compass
Connecting Wires

Procedures:
1. Connect the dry cells and the solid wire with the
connecting wires
2. Move the magnetic compass around the solid
wire, observe the deflection of the compass needle.
Illustrate your observations.
3. Reverse the terminals of the dry cells, observe the
deflection of the compass needle. Illustrate your
observations.

ACTIVITY 3 CURRENT
CARRYING COIL
Materials:
Dry Cells Magnetic Compass

24 in Stranded wire Connecting Wires

Procedures:
1. Loop around the stranded wire in the magnetic
compass.
2. Connecty it with the dry cells using the connecting
wires, observe the deflection of the compass needle.
Illustrate your observations.
3. Reverse the terminals of the dry cells, observe the
deflection of the compass needle. Illustrate your
observations.

PROCESSING activity 2
and 3
1. Where is the direction of the
current in the wire? The magnetic
field?
2. What happens to the compass
needle as you reverse the
terminals of the dry cells?

ACTIVITY 4
ELECTROMAGNETIC SWING
Materials:
Dry CellsU-shaped magnets
6 in Solid wire #20 Connecting Wires
Procedures:
1. Make a stand that will hold the 6 in Solid wire
like a swing.
2. Connect it with the dry cells using the
connecting wires.
3. Place the u-shaped magnet and observe how
the solid wire moves.
4. Reverse the terminals of the dry cells. Illustrate
your observations.

ACTIVITY 5 ELECTRIC
MOTOR
Materials:
Dry Cells
U-shaped magnets
Copper wire strands
Connecting Wires
Procedures:
1. Make a stand that will hold your motor so that it
can
freely rotate.
2. Connect it with the dry cells using the
connecting wires.
3. Place the u-shaped magnet and observe the
rate and
the direction of its rotation.
4. Reverse the terminals of the dry cells. Illustrate
your observations.

PROCESSING activity 4 & 5

1. Why did the solid wire swing? And
the electric motor rotate?
2. What do you think will happen when
we increase the loops of your electric
motor model? If we add stronger
magnets?

APPLICATION
Performance task
- students will be evaluated based on
their outputs (electric motor and em
swing)
- Rubrics is required

CLOSURE
If there is a relationship
that exists between
electricity and magnetism,
can electricity be produced
just by the presence of
magnets and conductors?
