Nature and Aim of module


NATURE OF MODULE

This is an Elective module on the B.Sc.(Project and Facilities


Management) programme.
MODULE AIM

Theaim of the module is to give students some knowledge


of the impact of human activities on the physical
environment in its overall manner and its subsequent effects
on society; and how these impacts and consequences are
addressed using regulations, standards, institutions,
systems and tools. The module uses construction projects
and their management to illustrate the topics covered.

Synopsis
Synopsis of module as in syllabi of B.Sc.(PFM) Programme

The synopsis of the module, PF2401, as outlined in the syllabi


of the B.Sc.(Project and Facilities Management) programme is
outlined below.

The purpose of this module is to provide an overview of how


the environment is managed using tools, standards,
institutions, and systems. Key topics include the nature of
environmental problems as market failure, efficiency and
equity in environmental management, environmental impact
assessment, risk management, environmental and energy
policies, legal and institutional frameworks, and a variety of
tools such as private bargaining, standards, charges, pollution
rights, user fees, subsidies, and city planning and design.

Students Workload and Practical work


STUDENTS WORKLOAD
Students are expected to have the following workload
on the module:
two lecture hours per week of direct contact
two hours of tutorials per fortnight (4 tutorials altogether)
average of three hours per week to undertake individual
and group projects, assignments, etc per week
average of three hours per week to prepare for sessions
and assigned tasks.

PRACTICAL WORK
Students will have to collect information from various
sources in order to prepare the individual and group
assignments. Depending on the nature of the
assignment or project selected, and the aspect of the
project or company being studied, this may involve
some field work.

Teaching approach
The module will be taught through a series of
lectures and tutorials.

The case studies will be on real projects, and those


lectures will be delivered by prominent
practitioners.

Students are encouraged to attend the specially


arranged seminars under the M.Sc.(Environmental
Management) programme (on alternate Friday
evenings, from 6pm to 8pm).

Assessment
The grade for module will be derived from continuous
assessment of the work of students and an
examination:
two individual assignments
final examination.

The marks will be assigned as follows:
