ZOOM TIPS
Audio Only: Turn the camera to off
Setting Gain: Plug your headphones into your recorder. Set your audio gain meter by
actually listening. Place the recorder where it will be during the test, sit in the
chair, and talk. Your monitor settings should be somewhere in the middle,
preferably slightly high. If it get's in the red it is too loud and you'll get sound
autocut off.
Positioning: Face the microphone towards you as you recordas if you were recording
yourself on video.
Where: One of the best places to record is in a parked car in a quiet area (theyre
generally sound proof), in a closet, or in a room without many machines and
ventilationthe new digital area in the library has some places to record if you ask.
No Hard Surfaces: Do not place your recorder on a hard surface as it is highly sensitive
and any movement will register terribly. Place it on a towel. If interviewing outside,
place it in a sock.
Distance: Set your recorder around six inches to a foot away from your audio source.
Batteries: Have fresh batteries on handthis is not so much a problem for audio
recording as it is for video. You've got about an hour and a half. But count on an
hour.
Record Silence: Before beginning your recording proper, wait a few seconds before you
start, it makes editing easier and if you find you have some ambient noise later on,
that blank sound helps with noise reduction software in Audition:
