What is Information
 “Information is that which is transmitted by
the act or process of communication, it
may be a message, signal, a stimulus, it
assumes a response in receiving
organism
and therefore possess, response
potential,
it is instrumental and it usually
communicated in an organized or
formalized pattern” - Shera
Concept of information science
Definition of Information sciences
Information science (also information studies) is an
interdisciplinary science primarily concerned with the
collection, classification, manipulation, storage, retrieval
and dissemination of information.[1] Information science
studies the application and usage of knowledge in
organizations, and the interaction between people,
organizations and information systems. It is often
(mistakenly) considered a branch of computer science. It is
actually a broad, interdisciplinary field, incorporating not
only aspects of computer science, but also library science,
cognitive science, and the social sciences.

Definition of Information sciences
“Information science is an interdisciplinary science that
investigates the properties and behavior of information,
the forces that govern the flow and use of information,
and the techniques, both manual and mechanical, of
processing information for optimal storage, retrieval and
dissemination. This interdisciplinary science is derived
from and related to such fields as mathematics, logic,
linguistics, psychology, computer technology, operations
research, graphic arts, communications, library science,
management and other similar fields.”

2.Practical aspects
Scope of information science
Object of Information sciences
 It should provide the major role of
information service
 Specify the components of an information
system and indicate their relationship
1. What information services are to be
provided and how ?
2. What results are expected of a specific
service ?
3. What are the roles and responsibilities
of the information specialists ?
4.What special skills are needed in planning
and execution of a services ?
5. What are roles, responsibility of users vis-
à-vis the information services
administration and staff ?
 Must help in the establishment of
performance goals and determine the
priorities in providing information services
 Help in establish a sound body of policies

Information science
relationship of IT
 Definition of IT
Information technology (IT), as defined by the
Information Technology Association of America
(ITAA), is "the study, design, development,
implementation, support or management of
computer-based information systems,
particularly software applications and computer
hardware." In short, IT deals with the use of
electronic computers and computer software to
convert, store, protect, process, transmit and
retrieve information, securely.
Basic part of IT
 Computer
1.Hardware of computer
2.Operating system of computer
 Telecommunication
1.computer network
2.Telephone network
3.Radio network
4.Television network
5.Internet
