General Objectives
Three Subject Areas
Linear vs. torsional vibration
Crankcase deflection
Crankshaft deflection

Section One
Torsional and Linear
Vibrations

Linear

Torsional

Torsional Vibration
Crankshaft twist
(wind up)

Excessive Torsional
Vibration

Caused by uneven cylinder to

cylinder power impulses to the
crankshaft
Bank to bank imbalance
Uneven firing pressures
Cylinder misfires
Uneven ignition timing

Torsional Break

Viscous Damper
Replacement/Repair

At major overhaul time

If dented or leaking
If runout is excessive
After crankshaft torsional
breakage
When damper tests indicate

Linear Vibration
Caused by:

Component imbalance
Crankshaft deflection
Shaft misalignment
Poor operating conditions

Deflection Checks

Purpose?

Crankcase and
Crankshaft
Deflection Checks
Will identify deflection, which
causes bearing, linear vibration
and crankshaft failure
Should be performed at
commissioning, and once a year
thereafter

Release Method
Solid Mount Units
1. Zero the dials.
2. Loosen one hold down bolt, record the
reading, retighten the bolt (make sure
indicator returns to zero)
3. Repeat for all six mounting points.
4. All should spring up less than .005 inch
(.127mm) indicating the base and
crankshaft deflection is OK.

Corner Lift Method

Corner Lift Method (Engine Top View) Step One

Remove center shims, bolts to provide
a four (4) point mount

Dial Indicators

Corner Lift Method - Step 2

With the front hold down bolts
still tight zero both dials

Corner Lift Method - Step 3

Release the front hold
down bolts and record
front corner spring-up by
location
Example:
Right side spring up = .012 inches(.304mm)

Corner Lift Method - Step 4

Remove the front hold down bolts
Zero both dials
Raise the right corner until the left indicator
reads .001 inch (.025 mm), record the right
reading
Lower the corner
Example:
Right side spring-up = .012 inch (.304mm)
Right side lift = .040 inch (1.0mm)

Record this reading

.001 (.025mm)

Corner Lift Method - Step 5

Raise left corner until
right indicator reads .001
inch, record left reading
indicator reading. Lower
corner.
Example:
Right side spring-up = .012 (.304mm)
Right side lift = .040 (1.0mm)
Left side lift = .004(.101mm)

Record this reading

.001 (.025mm)
