Benefits of Using DPM

DPM provides the following features:
Backing up of multiple Hyper-V hosts and virtual
machines from a single application
Disaster recovery by replicating protected data to
secondary offsite locations
Protection of workloads such as SharePoint, AD
DS, SQL Server, Exchange Server, Windows 7,
and Windows 8.
Backups to cloud services with Window Azure
Online Backup
Enhanced reporting
Scriptable through Windows PowerShell
Support for CSV clusters and virtual machines
stored in SMB 3.0 file shares

Configuring Protection Groups

Protection groups are collection of data
sources (members) that group together the
following configuration settings:
Data protection methods such as disk, tape,
or cloud
Data retention
Synchronization frequency
Consistency checks
Recovery points
Compression

Options for Protecting Virtualization

Infrastructure
Host-level backups that may include item-

level recovery
Can be online or offline, subject to in-guest
operating system versions

Performing Virtual Machine Recovery

Virtual machine recovery considerations:
Consider the virtual machine recovery
location, and make sure there is adequate
space
Ensure that the performance of any systems
during a restore does not impact end users
Ensure recovered virtual machines maintain
desired security level

Do not recover and leave virtu1al machine hard

disks in unsecured locations

Key Features and Components of

Operations Manager

Demonstration: Using the Operations

Console
In this demonstration, you will review the
Operations Manager Console and its
workspaces including:
Monitoring
Authoring
Reporting
Administration

Overview of Management Packs

Management packs contain settings used to
monitor a specific application or device
Management packs can include:
Monitors
Rules
Views
Knowledge
Tasks
Reports
Run As profiles

Creating Overrides
Create overrides in Operations Manager to

specify the amount of data and events

collected and the alerts, rules, and tasks
you might create based on that data
Two management pack types: sealed and
unsealed
Can only store overrides in unsealed
management packs

Configuring Notifications
Configuring notifications:
Notification channels
Notification subscribers
Notification subscriptions
Scheduling and maintenance mode

Demonstration: Configuring Notifications

Configuring Reports and Reporting

VMM Reports available
in Operations Manager:

Capacity Utilization
Host Group Forecasting
Host Utilization
Host Utilization Growth
Power Savings
SAN Usage Forecasting
Virtual Machine Allocation
Virtual Machine Utilization
Virtualization Candidates

Lab Scenario
As usage of the A. Datum Corporation virtual
environment increases, IT management is
concerned about the lack of information available
about the environment. IT management wants to
ensure that all virtual machine and host computer
performance is monitored carefully. They also would
like to see high-level reports showing the
performance for the entire environment.
To provide this level of monitoring and reporting, you
must configure integration between VMM and
Operations Manager. You will then use Operations
Manager to provide IT management with better
reports regarding the virtualization infrastructure,
including performance monitoring.

Lab Review
After you integrate VMM with Operations

Manager, what reports are available?
