Questions
Do you believe in the Ministry of

Education mantra:
Every child can learn and every child
must
learn.
If the statement is true what is
preventing our students from learning ?

Answer
Everyone does learn.
Every person is born with a brain that

functions as an immensely powerful

processor.
Traditional schooling, however, often
inhibits learning by discouraging,
ignoring, or punishing the brain's natural
learning processes.

Questions about the

BRAIN
How is your brain like?

A cabbage
A raisin
A pillowcase
A grapefruit
Avocado
A walnut

Answers
The brain weight is the same as a medium cabbage

about 3 lbs.
Raisin Both are wrinkled or convoluted.
If not wrinkled it would be approximately the same
size as a pillow case.
The skin of a grapefruit is approximately the same
thickness as the cortex and it has a high percentage
of water
The texture of the brain is like that of a ripe avocado.
The walnut shell is similar to the function of the skull.
It protect what is inside

What is Brain-Based Learning?

Brain-Based Education is the purposeful

engagement of strategies that apply to how

our brain works in the context of education.
Caine and Caine (1991) developed twelve

principles that apply what we know about the

function of the brain to teaching and learning

Core Principles of Brain Based

Learning
The brain is a parallel processor, meaning it

can perform several activities at once, like

tasting and smelling.
Learning engages the whole physiology.
The search for meaning is innate.
The search for meaning comes through
patterning.
Emotions are critical to patterning.
The brain processes wholes and parts
simultaneously.

Core Principles of Brain Based

Learning
Learning involves both focused attention and

peripheral perception.
Learning involves both conscious and
unconscious processes.
We have two types of memory: spatial and rote.
We understand best when facts are embedded
in natural, spatial memory.
Learning is enhanced by challenge and
inhibited by threat.
Each brain is unique.

Instructional Techniques :
Caine & Caine
Three conditions for complex learning to

occur:
Orchestrated immersion--Creating learning
environments that fully immerse students in an
educational experience
Relaxed alertness--Trying to eliminate fear in
learners, while maintaining a highly challenging
environment
Active processing--Allowing the learner to
consolidate and internalize information by
actively processing it

Question
How do we get the dendrites to grow?
In groups create at least one activity

using the principles of brain based learning

presented by Caine and Caine and what you
have gleaned from the video about dendrite.

Basic Facts About the

Brain
Weighs only 3 pounds (about 2% of the
average body weight)
85% Water
Uses 20% of the oxygen we breathe
Uses 20% of the calories we consume
Contains more than 100 billion neurons (more
than stars in the Milky Way Galaxy)

Basic Facts About the

Brain
Babies are born with 100 billion neurons, but only

a relatively small number of them are connected.

Brain development is especially rapid during the
first year.
By age three, the brain has formed about one
thousand trillion connections, about twice as
many as adult brains have.
The ages between 3-10 are time of rapid social,
intellectual, emotional and physical development.
Brain activity in this group is more than twice that
of adults.

Basic Facts About the

Brain
Although new synapses continue to form

throughout life, never again will the brain be able

to master new skills or adapt to setbacks so
easily.
Age 11, the brain begins to prune the extra
connections at a rapid rate. (Use it or lose it!)
Prefrontal Cortex (PFC) continues to develop into
the mid-twenties. (judgement center, maturity)
After about age 25, the brain slowly starts
shrinking. Some research suggests that the
male brain shrinks at a faster rate than the
female brain.

Brain Based and Education

Feedback is best when it comes from reality,

rather than from an authority figure.

People learn best when solving realistic problems.
The big picture can't be separated from the details.
Because every brain is different, educators should

allow learners to customize their own

environments.

Brain Based and

Education
The best problem solvers are those that

laugh!
Designers of educational tools must be

artistic in their creation of brain-friendly

environments. Instructors need to realize that
the best way to learn is not through lecture,
but by participation in realistic environments
that let learners try new things safely.

Debate
Should Teachers' Colleges

focus on core academic

subjects like language,
math and science and
exclude the fundamental
pedagogical subjects.
