Transition to

Vegetarian
Vivek Shrivastava

Welcome
Thank you for your interest in transitioning to a vegetarian
diet.
It takes courage and displays a certain level of transformation
and evolution for you to be here.
The scope of this presentation is a vegetarian diet (meaning no
red meat, poultry or seafood but eggs and dairy are allowed).
However, the information and techniques outlined apply just as
well to vegan diets.
All information is shown for entertainment purposes only.
Please consult with a physician before making changes to your
diet or lifestyle.

About Me
Vegetarian for 12+ years.
Certified Massage Therapist for 18 years.
Certified Yoga teacher from the Yoga Center in India.
20+ years of spiritual questing and growth including Yoga,
Meditation, Tantra etc.
Made many mistakes while transitioning to a vegetarian
diet.
Created this seminar to assist others to avoid the mistakes I
made and reduce the suffering of animals and the suffering
of humans that eat them.

Its an Addiction!!
Its an addiction plain and simple!
A heroin addict thinks that heroin is the greatest thing in
the world, but it is actually harmful to the addict
However, it feels good when consumed
And it hurts when not consumed
However, if not consumed for an extended period of time,
the addict feels better and every aspect of his/her life
improves.
Meat eating is similar to an addiction and it is helpful to
deal with it as such.

Why humans can digest meat

Surely if we have the ability to digest meat then we are
meant to eat it?
Meat eating is an option for us when no other option is
available.
In the past, sometimes humans had no option but to
consume animals to stay alive particularly in the colder
parts of the world.
However, if we can go to the grocery store and easily
and conveniently get large varieties of fruits,
vegetables, grains, cereals, nuts and seeds, then there
is no need to eat meat.

What about Protein?

Huge misconception animal meat is protein and anything
vegetarian is not protein. This is not true!
Protein consists of 23 amino acids.
Anything edible has at least one amino acid and nothing has all
23 amino acids (except for man made protein powders).
The best amino acid profile is egg whites with 20 amino acids.
All we need are the 8 essential amino acids. Given an abundance
of these 8, the body can make the other 15 amino acids from the
8.
Vegetarian foods and combinations supply the 8 essential amino
acids easily and more.

3 Levels of Transfer
Modern nutrition advice considers the effect of food on only
the physical body (Fats, proteins, carbs, vitamins, minerals
etc.).
However, there are 2 other levels of transfer that are ignored.
Food affects you physically, mentally and spiritually
While meat eating will have a strengthening effect on the
body (in the short term) it will have a negative effect
mentally, and an even worse effect spiritually.
In the long term, the effect of meat eating on the physical
body is negative as well; including premature aging and the
onset of numerous diseases.

3 Levels of Transfer - Mental

The suffering the animals go through will result in
various hormonal imbalances in their bodies that will
transfer to the humans body when consumed and effect
the psychology of the person (fear, anger, hatred).
Each food item has an emotional effect on you over and
above the physical transfer of nutrients. For example,
chilies have a stimulating effect, rice has a mild sedative
effect, garlic has a mild aphrodisiac effect etc.
The mind is far more powerful than the body and
therefore should be catered to over the body.

3 Levels of Transfer - Spiritual

At a spiritual level, the animals spirit will clash with the
humans spirit and weaken the humans spirit.
Each food item also has a spiritual effect on you. The
Zen macrobiotic diet consumed by Tibetan monks is an
example of a diet more focused on the effect of food on
spirit rather than body development.
You will never find a meditation focused institution that
serves meat. Meat eating has a contrary effect to
meditation.
Spirit is far more powerful than either the mind or the
body and therefore should be the primary consideration.

Harmful Effects of Meat Eating

In the long term, increases cholesterol, toxins and causes premature
aging and various diseases. Also stresses the liver and kidneys.
Negative for the emotional and spiritual states which results in
warped psychological states of human beings that then results in
aggression (war), greed (wall street), lust (porn industry) etc.
Huge amount of suffering for the animals being eaten.
Negative karma which must be repaid.
Unnecessary strain for the environment. The cattle industry is
consuming huge amounts of natural resources and contributing to
global warming, the fishing industry has depleted fishes in the
oceans etc.

Benefits of Vegetarian Eating

Better health once the transition has been made and the initial
discomfort is over.
Slower and more graceful aging process.
More balanced emotional and spiritual states which result in
more balanced lives and focus on what is truly important
spiritual growth and evolution. There has never been a person in
history that evolved into an enlightened master while still eating
meat.
Less negative karma.
Less suffering of animals.
Better for Mother Earth.

Examples of Famous Vegetarians

Herschel Walker Does thousands of pushups, pull-ups,
squats and crunches a day. Eats only one vegetarian
meal a day although he does rarely eat small amounts
of chicken.
The Great Gama Greatest wrestler of all time. Never
lost a match in over 5,000 bouts. Did thousands of
pushups, squats etc. a day.
Carl Lewis Olympic track legend
Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein Legendary thinkers
Leonardo Da Vinci Greatest genius of all time.
Natalie Portman, Alicia Silverstone Actresses and

The Transition Phase

So if its so good for me why do I feel weak and awful
when I eat vegetarian?
Because you are giving up a powerful addiction and the
body has to adjust to getting nutrition from the new
source.
You will probably feel worse before you feel better.
How long you feel not good will vary from person to
person and your karma.

The Transition Phase (Continued)

Transition Phase (Continued)

So the trick lies in getting through the period of discomfort
after which one will feel equally as good if not better than
when one started.
Some people switch to a vegetarian diet in one go and never
look back. This is quite challenging and doesnt usually work
well as most people who try this break down and go back to
eating meat with a vengeance.
I recommend a gradual phased approach also incorporating
reducing consumption of the more evolved animals first.
This approach allows the person to eat a meat meal if they
really feel like they need to.

Evolution Approach
Reduce the consumption of more evolved animals first
(red meat, mammals).
Then when no red meat is being consumed, reduce the
consumption of poultry (chicken, turkey etc.).
Then when no red meat and poultry is being consumed,
reduce seafood until no animal meat is being
consumed.
Eating less evolved animals reduces a lot of the
negative effects of meat consumption so even if you
dont become fully vegetarian, you can lessen the
negative impact on the world and yourself significantly.

Phased Approach
Reduce the number of meat meals gradually.
For example, start out with cutting out meat at breakfast
but still eat it for lunch and dinner. Then after a week or two
of doing this, eliminate meat from both breakfast and lunch
and only eat it at dinner. Eventually eliminate it from dinner
as well.
Another way to phase out meat is to have a meat
consumption day and then the next day would be a
vegetarian day. After a week or two of this, have two
vegetarian days between a meat day. Keep increasing the
number of veggie days between meat days.

Phased Approach (Continued)

Also reduce the meat portions at each meal. Instead of one chicken
breast eat half a chicken breast with extra portions of the vegetarian
parts of the meal. Keep reducing the meat portions with time.
It is important to be able to distinguish between the habitual need
for meat from a real requirement of the body to consume meat.
Allow yourself a meat meal when your body really requires meat.
Then continue with vegetarian meals after that. Eventually the
bodys calls for meat will reduce and become non existent.
Once you have reached one month of no meat at all, you can shoot
for being more strict and not having any meat meals at all for an
extended period. After 3 months of no meat, you can attempt
never eating meat again.

Partial Vegetarian
Partial vegetarian is better than no effort at all.
Every meat eater could reduce their meat consumption
by half easily. That would have a significant impact on
their health and the world.
Dont get too caught up in the label. Instead of saying I
am a vegetarian, think of it as I am making healthier
eating choices.
Allow yourself mentally to have the freedom to eat meat
if you really want to. This will, paradoxically, make you
obsess less about meat and make vegetarian choices
easier.

Hormones and Vegetarian Diet

There is some truth to the wimpy stereotype associated to
vegetarians.
This is because of the drop in testosterone that occurs to
vegetarians when they transition but it is not the vegetarian
diets fault!
Eating meat causes you to ingest the animals hormones.
This causes your own body to produce less hormones and get
used to producing less hormones as it is getting them from the
meat.
So when you transition to vegetarian, you are left with a lower
level of hormones as your body is not used to producing normal
amounts; particularly testosterone in men.

Hormones and Vegetarian Diet

You can take herbal supplements that increase your
bodys testosterone production.
I would recommend taking a saliva hormone test after 3
months of continuous vegetarian eating and
supplement accordingly.

Supplements
Multivitamin, multimineral (I recommend raw).
Protein Powder Whey, Micellar Casein, Plant based.
3-6-9 Omega oils.
Iron deficiencies sometime occur Spirulina, Chlorella
helps.
Vitamin B family.
Testosterone for men.
A well planned vegetarian diet should not require any
supplementation (once hormones are balanced).

Lifestyle Changes
Spend more time with vegetarian people, avoid meat eaters
who are not supportive.
Eat at home more, invite friends over and create a social circle
that supports vegetarian eating.
Spend time with animals, you will feel less like eating them
once you get to know them better.
Yoga and deep breathing (pranayama) exercises are beneficial
during the transition phase. Substitute these for other exercise
practices that you might be doing during the transition phase.
Fasting helps a lot Juice fast or water fast.

Hints and tips

Its all in the mind. It is easy to psych yourself out. Remind
yourself that there are many vegetarians in the world who are
healthy and productive. Ignore the fear of possible deficiencies
that may come up in your mind.
When the desire for meat comes upon you, think of the suffering
of the animal being served as a meal and how it must have
begged and pleaded for its life. Also think of the blood and gore of
its slaughter.
Eating oily fruit like avocado reduces the desire for meat. When
the desire for meat is strong, eat an avocado and see how you feel
20 minutes after that.
Take some deep breaths when you feel your mind giving way.

Hints and Tips (Continued)

Dont be too strict on yourself. If you really need to eat
meat, do that and then go back to a vegetarian diet. This is
going to be a gradual process for most people.
Be gentle on yourself during the transition phase.
Remember that you will feel better than ever once it is
over. If you are used to doing intense exercise, reduce the
level of exercise during this time. You can pick up the pace
once the transition phase is over.
Avoid consuming too much soy. This can cause a spike in
estrogen in men especially. There are other vegetarian
protein sources available.

Hints and Tips (Continued)

Indian cuisine is a good source for vegetarian meal
ideas as the country has had an ancient tradition of
vegetarianism and the cuisine is designed for
vegetarians (more than 50% of the country is
vegetarian).
A liver and gall bladder flush to start with is highly
recommended. I personally do one every year.
