Virtualization Technologies
Virtualization-what is it ?

Separation of a resource or a request for service from the physical

delivery of the service.
Provides a layer of abstraction between computing, storage and
networking hardware and the applications running on it.
Virtualization makes possible:
Hardware independence of OS and applications.
Virtual machines can be provisioned to any system.
OS and Application can be encapsulated into one virtual system.
Each virtual machine represents a complete system with processors,
memory, networking, storage.

Virtualization - Concepts
Partitioning

Running multiple services on the same machine and

sharing the underlying resources.

Two approaches:

Hosted approach provides partitioning services on top of a

standard OS.
Hypervisor architecture layer of software first installed
on a clean x86 system.
More efficient as it has direct access to hardware
resources.

Leaders :
Microsoft and VMware remain in the Leaders quadrant in 2015.
While VMware retains dominant market share, the gap between
Microsoft and VMware is slowly decreasing due to a growing market
interest in comparing alternatives, price differences and cloud
computing.

Challengers :
Challengers in this market have a strong Ability to Execute but have
a more focused marketing or product vision. In 2015, there are no
clear challengers in this market against Microsoft and VMware.

Visionaries :
At this point in the x86 server virtualization infrastructure market,
there are no Visionaries that are not also executing well. However,
future visionaries may emerge based on evolving strategies to
support lightweight VMs and containers.

Niche players :
Oracle has moved into the Niche Players quadrant based on success
limited to an Oracle-only stack and the fact that there is little
market synergy between Oracle VM and Oracle Solaris Zones. Odin
and Red Hat remain Niche Players in this market. it is clear Citrix is
no longer investing to keep up with market leaders VMware and
Microsoft at least for traditional server virtualization in the data
center. Instead, it is focusing on making XenServer an attractive
hypervisor for cloud infrastructure and for desktop virtualization .

Vmware
VMware has maintained its functionality lead, introducing
vSphere 5.5 in September 2013. VMware continues to have
dominant market share, and customers remain very satisfied
with product capabilities and vendor support. However, client
inquiries have been significantly increasing about
comparisons between VMware and Hyper-V, specifically.
While few large enterprises are switching, some smaller
enterprises that are not far along in their virtualization
deployment are switching (often from VMware to Hyper-V)

Strengths

VMware has a broad virtualization strategy from the data

center to the cloud.
VMware is a virtualization technology leader, with
significant investments and innovation.
VMware receives high customer satisfaction from a large
installed base.

Cautions

The cost of VMware offerings tends to be high.

VMware has a low penetration for newer, "cloud-native"
applications.

Microsoft Hyper-V Server:

Microsoft's Windows Server 2012 R2 was a major release,
delivered in October 2013, and during the last year and a half, that
release has become mainstream. Microsoft has effectively closed
most of the functionality gap with VMware in terms of the x86 server
virtualization infrastructure. Microsoft can now meet the needs of
most enterprises with respect to server virtualization. Its challenge
is neither feature nor functions, but competing in a market with an
entrenched competitor, VMware. Microsoft is now winning a good
percentage of enterprises that are not yet heavily virtualized
especially those that are mostly Windows-based (while Linux support
is improved, especially in Windows Server 2012 R2, there are few
customers using Hyper-V for Linux). However, few enterprises that
are heavily virtualized with an alternative technology are choosing
to go through the effort to switch.

Strengths

There is a large installed base of Windows servers and a large

number of Windows-only enterprises.
Microsoft's virtualization products are offered at a low price.

Cautions

Microsoft will find it difficult to convert the entrenched VMware

installed base, especially in large enterprises.
While improving, Microsoft's management tools have some ease-ofuse weaknesses.
Microsoft faces growing competition with open-source-based
solutions, especially in the service provider market.

Citrix XenServer
In recent years, Citrix has executed a number of fundamental
changes that refocus and reposition XenServer as a platform for
cloud infrastructures and desktop virtualization more than data
center use. The success of CloudPlatform or XenDesktop/XenApp is
less reliant on the success of XenServer; however, as a core
underlying virtualization technology for these products, XenServer
can potentially help accelerate Citrix's success in both areas, and
enterprises can rely on Citrix to maintain investments in XenServer
that specifically help their CloudPlatform or XenDesktop businesses.

Strengths

XenServer is a good product offering at zero cost (except for paid

support).
Citrix has a large opportunity in the telecom and cloud service
provider markets that rely heavily on open-source Xen today.
Citrix has a large reseller channel.

Cautions

Marketing execution and reach are limited for XenServer, while

industry perception favors competitors.
Citrix faces open-source software (OSS) competition from KVM and
OpenStack, and it must further develop the community and vendor
support.

RedHat
Red Hat's virtualization strategy should be to first become
the No. 3 virtualization vendor behind VMware and
Microsoft.

Strengths

Red Hat has a strong and loyal RHEL customer base

opportunity (much of which can virtualize using hypervisors
or containers).
Red Hat with CloudForms has a solid offering for
enterprises interested in OpenStack, and extends to
middleware, management and PaaS (Plateform as a
Service).

Cautions

Red Hat has achieved limited sales and marketing

execution to date, while most competitors are gaining. The
company must leverage its RHEL business more
aggressively to generate RHEV push.
