Classroom Management

Objectives
We will explore:
some terms related to classroom
the terms classroom management and
discipline and their importance
some tips for effective classroom
management

Some terms
Instructional time: amount of time
assigned to work on instructional tasks
Time-on-task (also called engaged time):
amount of instructional time that the
learners are doing academic work

Exploring classroom management

The actions teachers take to create an
environment that supports and facilitates
both academic and social-emotional
learning.
(Evertson and Weinstein)

In simple terms, classroom

management is:
A set of rules, words, and deeds that you, the
classroom teacher, use to keep your
classroom running smoothly so that you and
your students can work, teach, and learn
safely and efficiently.

Classroom management vs.

discipline
Classroom management is not the same as
discipline. Discipline is a subset of
classroom management. The terms are often
misused to mean the same thing

Discipline
Training that corrects, molds, or perfects

the mental faculties or moral character

(Webster's)

Behaviour in accordance with the set

rules of conduct

Why classroom management ?

For maximum effective use of learning time
for students
For continuous motivation of students
towards learning
For maximizing academic learning time to
improve Student Achievement

In order to
have an
effectively
managed
classroom;
think of
using these
tips

Tip # 1: To maintain discipline

Be consistent in your behaviour/ attitude
Be consistent and fair in punishments
Repeat and reinforce the most important
class rules almost daily
raise hands to ask/respond
pay attention while someone is speaking

Tip # 2 Examine timing

Our brains are not wired to remain focused
on one particular thing for an extended
length of time
Anything in the surrounding can distract
students easily
(Donna Walker Tileston, 2004)

Tip # 2 Examine timing

Use the students age as a guide
20 minutes is maximum that 17-18 year old
students can listen before becoming
disengaged
12-15 minutes is maximum concentration
time for students between ages 13 -16

Tip # 3 Examine the activity

If you have been talking for a while, change
directions!
After 20 min: Place students in pairs
(partner A & B); A tells B everything she
can remember about what was discussed in
the last 20 minutes; Next, B tells A about
what she can remember about the lesson
that A has left out.

Tip # 4 Change your method

One reason so many students do not do well
in the classroom is that they are taught and
re-taught in the same way
Re-teach using different words and a
different method
Ask the students to volunteer to explain a
point that they have understood well for the
class in their own words

Tip # 5 Utilize people resources

Bring in guest speakers
Ask students to teach parts of the lesson
Request colleagues to teach a topic

Tip # 6: Manage your Time

Enter and leave the class on time
Pre-arrange materials and space
Multimedia/ OHP; books; lab, library
Plan your lesson according to the available
class time and complete each activity on time
Make students used to working on time by
giving timed activities

Tip # 6: Time is wasted when

Teachers have no consistent plan
Students do not understand the kind and
quantity of work to be done during a period
Teachers have no uniform plan for
distributing and collecting materials
Students do not understand how to work with
others

Tip # 7: Before going to the class

Study the topic very carefully and properly
Read reference materials on that topic
Find out the meaning of any new words or
complex sentence

Tip # 7: Before going to the class

Study any other related topics that you may
wish to refer to
Anticipate students questions and think of
possible answers/examples for such
questions

Tip # 8: While going to the class,

remember
Your words, attitude and actions act as a
model for students; and unconsciously
become a part of their behaviour
Your expression and the tone of voice will
determine the class environment and will
reflect in students respond to you

Tip # 8: While going to the class,

remember
Your personal matters are not a part of the
classroom; so, leave them outside
Carry your own book, lesson plan/notes,
material
Always ink your markers

Tip # 9: During class

Before starting, give a few moments to the
students to get settled
Announce the topic clearly and loudly
Explain everything through relevant
examples
Give clear instructions for each task

Tip # 9: During class

Engage ad stretch students meaningfully
Give equal attention to all the students
Look at all the students while asking or
responding to questions

Tip # 9: During class

Involve all the students in the lesson
Ask them to supply explanations,
examples
Encourage them to question and respond
to questions
Ask them questions
Appreciate their responses equally

Tip # 9: During class

Never make fun of any idea, example,
student
Never laugh or give special smiles/
expressions at any response or question
Draw all students attention to questions
asked by any student

Tip # 9: During Class

When all are attentive, repeat the question
and invite them to respond to that question
Repeat the answer clearly so that all can
learn
Address all the students while responding to
any question by a student instead of going
near her to respond while others are busy
talking

Tip # 9: During Class

Always be on
the move to
monitor work
give assistance
check
behaviour
Maintain
discipline

Tip # 10: Remember these donts

Dont talk about your personal matters and/
or those of any other teacher or staff
Dont discuss your personal preferences and
opinions about any controversial or
sensitive topics including religion, politics
and cultural elements

Tip # 10: Remember these donts

Dont talk derisively about any other
teachers ideas, personality, teaching
methods
Dont use impolite words and expressions
while talking to students

Tip # 11: Remember your students are

adolescents
They will respect authority and appreciate
respect and care given to them
They may think of you as their best friend
today and their worst enemy tomorrow
They will have a score of moods in a single
day

Tip # 11: Remember your students are

adolescents
They will be happy on very small matters
and sad and disheartened on an equally
small matter
They will try to read your face and tone and
give importance to the things they feel are
important from your point of view

Tip # 11: Remember your students are

adolescents
They will learn important life lessons while
studying in your class
They will learn sense of responsibility, fair
play, honesty and care from you
They will always agree with any decision if
you motivate them through logic and reason

Students take you as a model to be followed;

and it is in your hands to shape an effective
model for your students
Thus,
the way you manage your classroom - your
lesson, your time, your interaction with
students and your attitude to them and to
your work - is what makes you an effective
or an ineffective teacher and your class an
effectively or ineffectively managed class

Time to Ponder
What do I do in the class?
Which aspects of my classroom
management need improvement?

Thank You!
