History

The history of deforestation started when humans

primarily occupied the earth.

The first method that people used was the burning

of forests.

Deforestation evolved in the 1950s.

History

About 8, 000 years ago, forests are estimated to

have covered about 15 billion acres (half of the
Earths land surface).

One half of the forests that covered the Earth are

gone.

Each year, another 16 million hectares disappear.

Background Information

Controlled

fire is the
oldest method of
deforestation.It has
been around since
ancient times.

Bulldozing is the
newest and most
efficient method of
deforestation.

Background Information

Deforestation is the removal of a forest or stand of

trees where the land is thereafter converted to a
nonforest use.

Examples of deforestation include conversion of

forestland to:
farms, ranches, or urban use.

Origins

Tropical rainforest constitutes 26 percent of

global forest area.

Almost 60 percent of existing tropical forests are

rain forest.

Most tropical forests are mainly in

South America (1.4 billion acres), Africa (670
million acres), and Asia (490 million acres).

From 1980 to 1990 about 25 million acres of

tropical forest was cleared.

Origins

BEFORE

AFTER

This is an example of deforestation in the Amazon.

Soil Erosion

Erosion is the washing away of soil by the flow of

water

The loss of trees, which anchor the soil with their

roots, causes widespread erosion throughout the
tropics.

Only a a small part of areas have good soils,

which after clearing are quickly washed away by
the heavy rains.

Endangered species
Many

Species of monkeys
like the Golden-bellied
Capuchin are facing
extinction.

Species of birds like the

Yellow-crested Cockatoo
are endangered.

Extinction

The greatest loss effects from the destruction of wilderness

will be the mass extinction of species that provide Earth
with biodiversity.

The extinction rate of today may be 1,000 to 10,000 times

the biological normal, extinction rate of 1-10 species
extinctions per year.

Extinction doesnt only have to do with animals, but with

trees and plants as well.

Diagrams and Models

This model shows how the

USA has cut down their
forests from 1620 through
1920.

90% of the forests that

once covered much of the
lower 48 states have been
cleared away.

Models and Diagrams

This Chart shows

how soil erosion
reduced
throughout the
years.
People have
looked for ways
to stop soil
erosion since the
1980s.

Models and Diagrams

Recovery time of a forest after clearing and

burning.
It takes 100+ years for forest to become as they
were before they were cut.

Current Impact on Earth

Deforestation affects the earth's physical

environment by causing:
Soil erosion
Poor water quality.
Reduced food security.
Impaired flood protection.
Animal extinction.

Solutions
Scientists have come up with ways to solve
deforestation.
Some ways are:
Reforestation
Legislation
Wildlife Sanctuaries
Commercial Forest Plantations
Water Management

Solutions

One of the most

effective ways of
solving deforestation
has to be
reforestation.

Reforestation is the
re-planting of forests.

Opinion

I think that deforestation is very crucial to the

planet and to every living organism.

We need to take the responsibility of caring for

Earth because it is our home.

it is only a matter of time before extreme chaos

comes over us.
