My mission in life

Serve the underserved Asians with the Best Available

Psychological Resources

Due to cultural barriers and mental health stigma, people in

need are reluctant to seek help, therefore we must reach out
to them, disseminate high quality psychological resources
and inspire them for life long learning

Integrate empirically supported treatment approaches (CBT,

DBT, EFT, Interpersonal, Psychodynamic, etc.), transform
the key therapeutic components into culturally sensitive
layperson language and practical skills everyone can learn
and benefit.

A Dream

My mission in life

Inspire and equip all who are willing to become a nurturer of

hearts to live out their healing potential and serve those
around them in need.

Developed a 12 session Journey to Intimacy: Emotional

Intelligence and Personal Growth Relationship Enhancement
Program (JTI) and trained over 20,000 Asian mental health
professionals and paraprofessionals in China, Taiwan, Hong
Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Qatar, South Africa, Europe,
Canada and USA to conduct JTI workshop in groups and form
numerous Second Families (support groups) for all who are
looking for meaningful connections.

Northwestern University Distinguished Service Award Criteria:

Leadership in a national/international professional organization; significant service to
Northwestern; development and research activities and mentoring activities.

Northwestern University 2015 Distinguished Service Award

Nomination Statements
It is with great enthusiasm that we nominate Dr. Wei-Jen Huang, Staff Psychologist and
Group Therapy Coordinator at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), for the
Distinguished Service Commitment to Excellence Award for 2015. For the past 19 years,
Wei-Jen has profoundly impacted the Northwestern community by touching the lives of
students, their families, and his colleagues.
International Leadership
Wei-Jen has a life mission to help others in need. Thus far in his career, he has trained over
20,000 people throughout Asia and the U.S. to be counselors, focusing specifically on
communities without mental health resources. A poignant example of Wei-Jens impact is
described by multiple families, who after learning communication skills in his workshops,
were able to end domestic violence in their lives and expressed gratitude in letters they sent
Wei-Jen with updates on the happiness of their families.
Wei-Jen has also given multiple keynote speeches at international conferences focusing on
relationship skills, social justice and compassion. For instance, he delivered a keynote at the
Rotary International Conference in 2014 to more than 600 representatives from over 150
nations (it was like a smaller United Nation), and the speech was simultaneously translated
into multiple languages.

Significant Contribution to Northwestern Student Life

Wei-Jens professional contributions and accolades are numerous and have left an
indelible mark on campus life. He helped brand and develop Northwestern community
and wellness programs that are now hallmarks of the institution. For instance:
Behind Closed Doors: the RA training in mental health, peer counseling and
interventions.
Contacts and Connections: bringing together Student Affairs and campus partners
to share experiences and build community.
Emotional Intelligence trainings: where each year students pack Searle Hall to learn
about relationship skills and the science of emotional intelligence from Dr. Love.
Most notably, he has coordinated CAPS group therapy program for many years. Every
year students rave about their experiences in group therapy. Student testimonials
include: The most important education Ive had. This is life-changing. The love and
support I was given was amazing, I will always cherish it and never forget it!. There
should be more people in the world like Dr. Huang.

Mentoring Activities
Wei-Jen has been a clinical supervisor for hundreds of Psychologists-in-training. All of us know
and use his phrases (i.e., Part of the Northwestern family, My dear brother, thank you for
your gift, you never know who you will meet on the train of life.) His kind heart and gentle
spirit has touched Northwestern and psychology students alike. He has such a natural way of
encouraging trainees while also gently challenging their advancement. Observing Wei-Jen touch
the most hard to reach students is an invaluable training experience. Wei-Jen also mentors new
staff members and welcomes them with love, acceptance, and warmth. He is committed to
training other staff in group therapy and shares his wisdom and compassion generously.
Despite all of these accomplishments, Wei-Jens greatest contribution is who he is as a person,
and how his spirit impacts every student, parent, faculty and staff member he encounters. He is
a master teacher of relationships and self-love. We are all more compassionate and better
human beings for working alongside him. His service has truly been distinguished, and his
impact will echo for years to come.
