Internet of Things

Internet of Things (IOT) is defined as the network of physical objects Things combined with electronics,
software, sensors and connectivity
It is to achieve greater value and services by exchanging data with manufacture, operator and other connected
devices
The Thing can be anything which can be installed with a unique IP address having ability to transfer data across
the network
The major idea behind the application of IOT is to connect all devices with internet
The Internet of Things has its wide application in many sectors like environment, transportation, infrastructure,
manufacturing, sales and marketing etc.

IOT in Vehicles
`
Connected Car
When there is Crash, the car sends real time data and location to emergency teams
Car can invoke maintenance requirement for performance issue without notifying owner through monitoring
Navigation system warns for traffic on the way ahead
Music goes off when mobile rings for effective communication

IoT to Aid Passengers

PROBLEM
Urban transport systems are complex
and difficult to navigate, especially for
disadvantaged users
Bus routes change with the time of day
Susceptible to delays and rerouting
Creates Barrier to use
Lack of Micro-navigation Versus
Macro-navigation information
Decline in Quality of Passenger
experience and satisfaction

Internet of Things

SOLUTIONS
Boom in Smartphone industry has
made urban transport systems
and bus services much more
accessible
Use of sensors to aggregate data
in London city airport in order to
improve its operation and
services.
Helps in monitoring queue times,
passenger movements, staff
requirements, etc
Linking real-time data from
different transport systems for
passengers to take more informed
decisions

Case of City of Madrid

Urban Bus Navigator
Continuous dynamic navigation information for passengers
Provides personalized, contextual information
Semantic Bus Ride Detection
Uses Wi-Fi based recognition system
UBN provides information about daily operation of bus in different routes in
Madrid - a passenger is riding on.
Dynamic Trip Tracking
Monitors a passengers trip progress using the phones GPS and semantic bus
ride detection system.
Gives information about the passenger being on track or off track
Deviations are recognized and triggers re-planning of the trip

Scope & Limitations

Understand the current traffic and parking problems in India
Analyze existing solutions to estimate their effectiveness
Identify gaps in the existing solutions
Estimate
Scope

and analyze parameters such as growth in number of

vehicles, rush hour timings, vehicle per km of road etc. to forecast the
traffic
Leverage Internet of things to provide improved solutions
Learn from success stories in developed countries
Propose IT driven solution to solve the traffic congestion and parking
problems
Scope of the study is limited to India

Limitations

Success stories from developed nations will be studied based on

availability
Financial feasibility of solution is not a part of our scope
