What is Network
Topology ?
A network topology is the
physical layout of computers,
cables and other components
on a network.

Types of Network
Topology

Bus Topology
Star Topology
Mesh Topology
Ring Topology
Hybrid Topology
Wireless Topology

Bus
Topology
A bus topology uses on cable ( co-axial ) as a main trunk to
connect all of the system together. When a computer sends out
a signal, the signal travels the cable length in both directions
from the sending computer. The signal reaches the end of the
cable length, it bounces back and returns in the direction it come
from. This is known as signal bounce. Signal bounce is a problem
, because if another signal is sent on the cable length and the
same time two signal will collide and be destroyed. For the
reason, at each end there is a TERMINETOR. It is designed to
absorb the signal when the signal reaches the end. Preventing
signal bounce. If there is no terminator, the entire signal network
fails because of signal bounce.

Advantages & Disadvantages of

Bus Topology

Advantages

Works well for small

network.
Easy to add to it.

Disadvantages

Management cost can

be high.

Star topology
In a star topology, all computers are
connected through one central device
known as HUB or SWITCH. Each work
station has a cable that goes from the NIC
to the hub or switch. It is the very popular
topologies
in
todays
networking
environment.

Advantages & Disadvantages of

Star Topology

Advantages Disadvantages

Good option for

modern network.
Low startup costs.
Easy to manage.

Hub is a single point

failure.
Requires more cable
then the bus.

Mesh Topology
In mesh topology, every work station
has a connection to every other work
station of the network.

Advantages & Disadvantages of

Mesh Topology

Advantages

Disadvantages

There are multiple

pathways to sent data
from one computer to
another.

It is very difficult to
manage because of
the multiple
connection.

Ring Topology
In a ring topology,
all
computers
are
connected via a cable
that loops in a ring or
circle. It has no start no
end because there are
no end, terminators are
not necessary in this
topology. Signal travel in
one direction on a ring
while they are passed
from one computer to
the next.

Advantages & Disadvantages of

Ring Topology

Advantages

The signal
degeneration is low
because each work
station is responsible
for regenerating or
boosting the signal.

Disadvantages

If one computer
fails or the cable link
is broken, the entire
network
could
go
down.

Hybrid Topology
Mixture of topologies is known
as hybrid topology. A very popular
hybrid topology is star bus topology,
in which a number of star topology
are connected by a central bus (coaxial cable). This is a popular
topology, because the bus will
connect hubs that are spread over
distance.

Star bus topology

Wireless Topology
A wireless topology is one in
which few cables are used to connect
system. The network is mode up of
transmitters that broad cast the
pockets using radio frequencies. In
wireless network the pcs have a
special transmitter/receiver, which
allows them to receive broad cast
and transmit.
