THE AGONY

AND
THE GLORY
OF THE CROSS
Lesson 3

THE
CRUCIFIXION
OF JESUS

REMEMBER THE WORDS OF

PAUL:

But far be it from me to

boast except in the cross of
our Lord Jesus Christ, by
which the world has been
crucified to me, and I to the
world.
(Galatians 6:14)

INTRODUCTION TO CRUCIFIXION
1. Crucifixion was probably
invented by the Persians, but
perfected by the ROMANS
2. Crucifixion destroyed human
dignity
It was DESIGNED to KILL MEN!
But, it was also designed to keep
them alive in horrible AGONY!

3. A DESCRIPTION:
A man was crucified naked
Nails pierced his wrists and legs
There was just a small amount of
blood. Main arteries not pierced!
It was difficult to breathe. To
exhale, the person must push up
with his feet, and endure pain!

Many lived for two or three days

Movement multiplied the misery
Headache, muscle spasms, nerve
spasms and terrible thirst!
Death came from shock and
exhaustion
When legs were broken, the victim
could not push up, and so, would
suffocate (See John 19:32, 33)

THE ENGLISH WORD

EXCRUCIATING
WHICH MEANS TERRIBLE
PAIN
LITERALLY MEANS
OUT OF THE CROSS!

THE SCOURGING OF JESUS

Jesus prophesied His own
flogging or scourging (Note
Mark 10:32-34, etc.)
Great welts, deep stripes and
a swollen body. Sometimes, eyes
were torn out, and teeth knocked
out.
Some people DIED from
scourging

Pilate ordered Jesus scourged.

(Matthew 27:26; Mark 15:15, etc.)
Then, to arouse sympathy, he
showed Jesus to the Jews!
Behold the man! (John 19:5)
No sympathy was aroused!
The Scripture places little
emphasis on the terrible suffering
involved in scourging!

DIFFERENT KINDS OF WOUNDS:

JESUS SUFFERED ALL OF THEM!
Bruises caused by FISTS, etc
Lacerations caused by scourging
Penetrating wounds caused by
SHARP instruments
Pierced hands and feet
(Psalm 22:16)

SIX HOURS ON THE CROSS

(Matthew 27; Mark 15; Luke 23;
John 19)
They came to the place of a skull
and crucified Him, a thief on each
side
The third hour to the ninth hour
would be 9:00 A. M. -- 3:00 P. M.

THE DEATH
OF JESUS
IS THE MOST FAMOUS
DEATH
IN ALL HISTORY!
This was Pauls SERMON --Christ crucified! (I Cor. 2:1, 2)

And I, when I came to you,

brothers, did not come proclaiming
to you the testimony of God with
lofty speech or wisdom.
For I decided to know nothing

among you except Jesus Christ

and him crucified.
(I Corinthians 2:1, 2)

DETAILS NOT DISCUSSED IN THE

TEXT
1. The Bible just says, There
they crucified Him (Luke
23:33)
2. We do NOT know the exact
shape of the CROSS. It was
probably like the traditional
shape, NOT an X or a T

3. We know the resurrection was

on the first day of the week
(Matthew 28:1, etc.)
4. We must STUDY to learn the
DAY of CRUCIFIXION
The gospels state 10 times that
Jesus was raised on the third
day

The text does say that Jesus would

be dead three days and three
nights, but this is a figurative
statement (Matthew 12:40)
If Jesus body was a literal 3 days
and 3 nights in the tomb, He
would have RISEN on the fourth
day
NOTE A PARALLEL! (Continued)

Rehoboam, who was asked to

lower taxes, told the people to
depart for three days, but they
returned on the third day
(I Kings 12:5, 12)
NOTE ALSO:
The day of crucifixion was the day
before the Sabbath, the
preparation day (Mark 15:42;
Luke 23:50-56; John 19:31)

INTERRUPTIONS ON THE ROAD

TO GOLGOTHA
1. The appearance of SIMON of
Cyrene (Matthew 27:32, 33, etc.)
He was forced to carry a portion of
the CROSS

Simon was the father of

ALEXANDER and RUFUS (Mark
15:21)
These sons may have been known
in the early church. This seems
possible, but is not certain!
There is a RUFUS mentioned in
Romans 16:13

There were people from Cyrene on

the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:10)
There were also preachers from
Cyrene who helped the new
church in Antioch (Acts 11:20)
There was also a prophet from
Cyrene as noted in Acts 13:1-3)

2. There were heartbroken

WOMEN (Luke 23:27-31)
Jesus told them that, because of
future sorrow, they should mourn
for themselves and their children
But turning to them Jesus said,
"Daughters of Jerusalem, do not
weep for me, but weep for
yourselves and for your children.
(Luke 23:28)

PLEASE CONSIDER:
The Jews traded the life of Jesus
for a wretched criminal, Barabbas
An apostle, Judas, betrayed Him
Another apostle, His good friend,
Peter, denied Him
An illegal court sentenced Him
Evil men beat Him, and hardened
soldiers crucified Him

THE FIRST THREE HOURS ON

THE CROSS
Jesus was offered a drink that
would numb pain, but refused it
(Matthew 27:34, etc.)
The people called for Him to come
down from the CROSS! (Matthew
27:39-44, etc.)
The thieves participated!

CONSIDER:
If Jesus HAD COME DOWN from
the CROSS, there would be NO
SALVATION for any of us!
The Jews are NOT NOW looking for
the Messiah!
They brought the blood of Jesus
on themselves and their children!
(Matthew 27:25)

Jesus FORGAVE one of the

thieves who turned to Him in
penitence (Luke 23:43)
Jesus forgave sins during His
ministry. See Mark 2:1-12
The thief may have been baptized
with the baptism of John. This is
unknown!

The thief lived and was forgiven

under the LAW OF MOSES!
Jesus WILL went into effect at
HIS DEATH! (Hebrews 9:16, 17)
The BAPTISM of the New Covenant
was NOT ANNOUNCED until the day
of PENTECOST! (Matthew 28:19;
Acts 2:1-47)

During these hours, Jesus took

care of HIS MOTHER! (John 19:26,
27)
Jesus was saying to John, Stay
with My mother!
We NOTE that the mother and
brothers of Jesus were with
disciples and apostles waiting in
Jerusalem before Pentecost (Acts
1:13, 14)

CONSIDER;
The MOTHER and the BROTHERS
of Jesus must be saved as we are!
Before the birth of Jesus, MARY
SAID, My soul exalts the Lord,
and my spirit has rejoiced in God
my Savior (Luke 1:46, 47)
Mary had a SAVIOR also!

A FINAL THOUGHT:

Life is not futile.

Failure is not fatal.
Death is not final.
