THE AGONY

AND
THE GLORY
OF THE CROSS
Lesson 8

PROPHECIES
OF
JESUS

But far

be it from me to
glory except in the cross
of our Lord Jesus Christ,
by which the world has been
crucified to me, and I to the
world.
(Galatians 6:14)

PROPHECY
IS
A POWERFUL
TOOL!

SOME THOUGHTS:
1. There are 30,000 promises in
the Bible. God fulfills all of
them!
2. One man said there are 332
fulfilled prophecies of Jesus in
the Old Testament

3. A brother in Christ said that

Jesus claimed:
----To have authority 9 times
----To be the Son of God 90
times
----To be sent by God 33 times
----To be the Messiah 31 times

CONSIDER:
Even at the BEGINNING of His
personal ministry, Jesus claimed
to be the Messiah
Read Isaiah 61:1-3
And, Luke 4:16-27

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because he has anointed me to

preach good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim
release to the captives and
recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are
oppressed,
(Luke 4:18)

WHAT WAS JESUS CLAIM?

And he began to say to them,
"Today this scripture has been
fulfilled in your hearing.
(Luke 4:21)
BECAUSE OF HIS WORDS, THEY
WANTED TO KILL HIM!
(Continued)

When they heard this, all in the

synagogue were filled with
wrath.
And they rose up and put him
out of the city, and led him to the
brow of the hill on which their
city was built, that they might
throw him down headlong.
(Luke 4:28, 29)

CONSIDER SOME PROPHECIES

OF JESUS
He is the seed of Abraham
(Genesis 22:18; Galatians 3:8-16)
He is the prophet like Moses
(Deut. 18:15-18; Acts 3:22-26)
Born of a virgin
(Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23-25)

He is the LIGHT to the Gentiles

(Isaiah 49:6; Acts 13:46, 47)
A lowly KING riding into
Jerusalem (Zechariah 9:9, 10;
Matthew 21:1-11)
The Righteous BRANCH
(Jeremiah 23:5; Hebrews 7:14)

JESUS WAS FOREKNOWN

BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF
THE WORLD
.even as he chose us in him

before the foundation of the

world, that we should be holy and
blameless before him.
(Ephesians 1:4)

SOME PROPHECIES OF JESUS

RELATED TO THE CROSS
Manner of His death
Yea, dogs are round about me; a
company of evildoers encircle me;
they have pierced my hands and
feet
(Psalm 22:16)

SILENT before His accusers

He was oppressed, and he was
afflicted, yet he opened not his
mouth; like a lamb that is led to
the slaughter, and like a sheep
that before its shearers is dumb,
so he opened not his mouth.
(Isaiah 53:7)

He would be associated with

CRIMINALS
Therefore I will divide him a
portion with the great, and he shall
divide the spoil with the strong;
because he poured out his soul to
death, and was numbered with the
transgressors; yet he bore the sin
of many, and made intercession
for the transgressors.
(Isaiah 53:12)

They would CAST LOTS for His

clothes (Psalm 22:18)
He would have NO BONES
BROKEN (Psalm 34:20; John
19:36)
He would be BURIED with the rich
(Isaiah 53:9)
He would be the rejected
cornerstone (Psalm 118:22, 23)

ISAIAH IS CALLED THE

MESSIANIC PROPHET
The book of Isaiah is quoted more
than 50 times in the New
Testament
Isaiah 53 is the beautiful Suffering
Servant chapter
Part of Isaiah 53 is quoted at least
six times in the New Testament

THE JEWS
HAVE NEVER UNDERSTOOD
ISAIAH 53.
THEY HAVE APPLIED IT TO THE
NATION OF ISRAEL!
VERY TRAGIC!

SOME BIG WORDS

CONCERNING THE CROSS!
If, because of one man's
trespass, death reigned through
that one man, much more will
those who receive the abundance
of grace and the free gift of
righteousness reign in life
through the one man Jesus
Christ. (Romans 5:17)

ATONEMENT
1. Every sin and every sinner
will be punished --- either at
the CROSS or in hell
2. Without HOLINESS, NO
ONE CAN SEE THE LORD
(Continued)

Strive for peace with all men, and

for the holiness without

which no one will see the

Lord.
(Hebrews 12:14)
Can man in sin be saved? If so,
how, when, and by whom?

3. The LAMB OF GOD takes

away the sin of the world
(John 1:29)
4. The Greek word, ilasmos in
I John 2:2, is translated
propitiation or expiation.
It
is Gods means of forgiveness
(Continued)

My little children, I am writing

this to you so that you may not
sin; but if any one does sin, we
have an advocate with the Father,
Jesus Christ the righteous;
and he

is the expiation for

our sins, and not for ours only
but also for the sins of the whole
world. (I John 2:1, 2)

5. In ENGLISH, the word,

expiate means to pay the
penalty for.
JESUS is the ONLY means for
FORGIVENESS!
6. Jesus is the Lion of Judah,
but He is also the LAMB!
Forgiveness comes through the:
LAMB!

You know that you were ransomed

from the futile ways inherited from
your fathers, not with perishable
things such as silver or gold,
but with the precious blood of
Christ, like that of a lamb without
blemish or spot.
(I Peter 1:18, 19)

ATONEMENT DEMANDS THAT

GOD IS RIGHT!
GOD IS RIGHT CONCERNING
OUR PROBLEM --- SIN!
GOD IS RIGHT CONCERNING
THE ONLY SOLUTION --THE CROSS!

JUST, JUSTICE,
JUSTIFICATION
1. Please read Romans 3:20-27.
This is the heart of Romans
.they are justified by his grace
as a gift, through the redemption
which is in Christ Jesus,
(Romans 3:24)
(Continued)

whom God put forward as an

expiation by his blood, to be
received by faith. This was to
show God's righteousness,
because in his divine forbearance
he had passed over former sins;
(Romans 3:25)

it was to prove at the present time

that he himself is righteous and
that he justifies him who has faith
in Jesus.
Then what becomes of our
boasting? It is excluded. On what
principle? On the principle of
works? No, but on the principle of
faith. (Romans 3:26, 27)

2. NOTE THIS IMPORTANT

POINT!
A HOLY GOD CANNOT PERMIT
SIN TO GO UNPUNISHED!
Today, MAN DOES NOT WANT TO
SEE HIMSELF IN SIN!

BUT, HE IS!

3. TO SATISFY GODS HOLINESS

AND JUSTICE, SIN MUST BE
PUNISHED!
CHRIST IS THE ANSWER!
MAN MUST BE JUSTIFIED!
SIN CANNOT BE OVERLOOKED!
(Continued)

.nor thieves, nor the greedy,

nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor
robbers will inherit the kingdom of
God.
And such were some of you. But
you were washed, you were
sanctified, you were justified
in the name of the Lord Jesus
Christ and in the Spirit of our
God. (I Corinthians 6:10, 11)

4. IT WAS THE JUSTICE of

God THAT CRUCIFIED JESUS
SIN MUST BE PUNISHED!
THE BLOOD OF JESUS MEETS
THE JUSTICE OF GOD!
5. Please READ Romans 3:24-27
AGAIN!
God is the JUSTIFIER!

SUBSTITUTION
1. The CROSS was a vicarious,
substitutionary death.
Someone died for another
2. JESUS was the substitution
for us!
(Romans 5:5-10; Ephesians 1:313; Philippians 3:9; I Peter 2:24;
I John 2:1, 2) (Continued)

He himself bore our sins in

his body on the tree, that we
might die to sin and live to
righteousness. By his wounds
you have been healed.
(I Peter 2:24)

3. We REMEMBER the
SCAPEGOAT OR AZAZEL
of the OLD TESTAMENT
SINS WERE CONFESSED OVER
THE GOAT, AND THE GOAT WAS
SENT INTO THE WILDERNESS!
(Leviticus 16:10, etc.)
(Continued)

but the goat on which the lot fell

for Aza'zel shall be presented alive
before the LORD to make
atonement over it, that it may be

sent away into the

wilderness to Aza'zel.
(Leviticus 16:10)

4. Our righteousness is a
DECLARED righteousness
(Romans 3:25, 26)
5. We are declared righteous
when we are baptized into
Christ (Romans 6:1-4;
Galatians 3:26, 27)

ADOPTION
1. When children are adopted,
people will say, This child
does not know how blessed he
is
2. The New Testament teaches
that disciples of Jesus are
ADOPTED!
(Continued)

For you did not receive the spirit

of slavery to fall back into fear, but

you have received the Spirit

of adoption as sons, by whom
we cry, "Abba! Father!
(Romans 8:15)
Another FIGURE is the NEW
BIRTH (John 3:1-5)

3. The adopted children are

HEIRS of a wonderful
inheritance (Romans 8:16, 17)
4. By Gods grace, He
predestined the adoption
of sons and daughters
he predestined us for adoption as
sons through Jesus Christ,
according to the purpose of his
will, (Ephesians 1:5)

AS
CHILDREN OF GOD
WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT WE
SHALL BE, BUT WE WILL BE
LIKE HIM!
(I John 3:1-3)
