IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS/MODIFICATIONS DONE IN FIRE

DETECTION & ALARM SYSTEM DURING FY 2012/13:

Improved methodology for cleaning:

Previously: All the detectors were previously used to be cleaned by

blowing air in high speed on regular basis.

Presently: Each & every detector is taken out from its base, then
dismantled completely & cleaned thoroughly.

Advantages: The occurrence of false alarm due to high dust concentration

in detectors has vanished completely. It increased the reliability of Fire Detection
& Alarm System.

Proper Use of Available Resources:

Previously: The HMI of FAP-3 which is placed in CHP (I) was not working due
to hardware problem. Its motherboard was changed but the same problem
reoccurred after few days.

Presently : A faulty CPU of ASLD Unit#3 was checked & its SMPS was found
faulty. The SMPS was changed & now its working satisfactorily.
Advantages : Instead of using a new CPU for the system, available
resources were used to solve the problem. It helped in the cost cutting and saved
valuable resources.

Improved Deluge Valves Maintenance & Operation:

Previously:
1. All the 122 Deluge Valves were checked on regular basis but there
was no proper schedule of checking.
2. Some of the DVs were not in working condition due to faulty modules
as well as absence of pressure switches & solenoids.
Presently:
1. Preventive Maintenance (PM) schedule of all DVs have been uploaded
in SAP in accordance with TMD.
2. All the DVs are taken inline by rectifying the above problems.
Advantages:
1. More effective checking of each DV is now possible as their PM is done
simultaneously by both mech. & C&I dept.
2. Also the chances of slippage of any DV is omitted as the PM schedule
is loaded in SAP and maintained accordingly by both dept.
3. It has also increased the reliability & availability of DVs.

Increased Reliability of the Hydrant & Spray System:

Previously:
1. Lots of false operation of Hydrant & Spray pumps were noticed.
2. All the hydrant pumps were getting started simultaneously whenever there
was any pressure drop in the hydrant header.
3. Jockey Pump was taking frequent on/off which was damaging its mechanical
parts.
4. The auto on/off of all the Fire Pumps were solely based on pressure switches.
Also there was no system for continuous monitoring of Hydrant header
pressure.
Presently:
1. PLC logics for the auto on/off of pumps is thoroughly checked & rectified.
2. A delay of 10sec is given before the auto start command of each pump to
avoid the simultaneous start all pumps.
3. The frequent Cut-in/Cut-off problem of Jockey Pump was solved by increasing
its cut-off pressure set point limit from 9.0kg/cm2 to 9.5kg/cm2.
4. A Pressure Tx. Is installed on hydrant header for continuous pressure
monitoring. A Hooter is also provided for annunciation if header pressure
becomes greater than 11kg/cm2.
Advantages:
1. Energy conservation is achieved as the HPs can be manually stopped on
achieving the required pressure.
2. As the Pressure Tx. Is more robust & reliable, the overall reliability of the Fire
Water Pump system is increased many times.

Gave Eyes to Operation Dept. & Firemen:

Previously:
1. There was no indication in CCR for the ON/OFF of Fire Water Booster
pumps.
2. Due to Repeater Panel-1 &2, Firemen can monitor the TG & BOP areas
of the plant. But they were blind for Store & Urja Bhavan.
Presently:
1. Booster Pump for FIRE is inline & its ON-OFF Alarm is provided in CCR
LVS Unit#2.
2. The Computer for our TYCO System for Store & Urja Bhavan (which was
previously present in CCR Unit#4) is shifted to Fire Station through OFC
communication.
Advantages:
1. The operation Dept. can monitor the ON/OFF of Booster pump, hence
reliability is increased.
2. Previously our Firemen were totally dependent on Phone calls for any
fire incident in Store & Urja Bhavan as they were not having any means for
continuous monitoring. Now they are able to monitor the area through
computer graphics and also can reset the system from remote.
