*Periods:
1. Goryeo Dynasty

(A.D. 918-1392)
-Buddhism became the state religion and greatly influenced
politics and culture.
-The name "Korea" derives from the Goryeo Dynasty since
Arabian tradesmen started calling Goryeo "Corre.
-enjoyed the dance tradition of the Three Kingdoms initially,
but later added more varieties with the introduction of court
and religious dance from China's Song Dynasty.
3 types of music in Goryeo
a. Dangak- meaning music from Tang Dynasty China
b. Hyangak -or village music
c. Aak -or court music

2. Joseon Dynasty (1392 1910)


- Confucianism the countrys official religion.
- Han-geul, the Korean alphabet, was invented in 1443
-music was respected as an important element of rituals
and ceremonies.
- Folk dances, including the farmers' dance, shaman
dance and monk dance, became popular

* In general, Korean music falls under 2 main categories of


chongak (music of the upper classes) and sogak ( music
of the common classes). In keeping with standard
practice, we translate chongak as classical music and
sogak as folk music.

* Chongak is usually used to designate all pieces and music


forms performed and supported by members of the
upper classes as a form of amusement.

*Common elements of the Korean Music:

* Mostly monophonic but ornamentation is very

important in the structure of the music, with


the same melodic line the ornamental tones
may used, skip, or may differ.
* Is in triple time or groups of three beats. Duple
time is observed in the folk music of Korea.
* It has the same structure with the Chinese
pentatonic scale.

vocal and
instrumental music
of Korea?

*Vocal Music
-is one of the most important features in
their culture. The following are examples of
Korean vocal music:

a.

Kagok- a solo or duet song

b.

Sijo- is a classical Korean lyric,


which can be sung with an
hourglass instrument.

c. Kasa- which is considered as a long song


d. pansori- is a classical narrative song
-tells a long, dramatic story
e. sog-ak- is a folk music (Arirang, Nongbuga,etc.)
are examples of this religious music like
Shaman music; and Confucian music which
is done through vocal chants in their ceremonies.

*Instrumental Music of Korea


a.

Bohoeoja- is an instrumental music which originated


from traditional Chinese song.
b. Sujechon- is considered as one of the utmost successes
in traditional Korean music.
c. Cheongseonggok- is played in a solo for daegum and is
described as a high-tone piece in
instrumental music.

*Religious Forms of Korean music


- Buddhist and Shaman music consist of
vocal and Instrumental music.
*Shaman Ritual Music a collection of lively
mystical music to be played
during rituals.
*Buddhismis one of the older religions in South Korea.
It comes from the Mahayana branch of Buddhism,
similar to China and Japan.

*Folk Song or Court Music


- Includes farm, fishing, work, ceremonial
marriage, and childrens song. Pungmullori and
Samullori are examples of farmers folk song.
- offers a more energetic and capricious contrast to
the nations collection of classical music works.

* Arirang
- is one name for the pass
-a number of passes called "Arirang Pass" in Korea. One
of them is located in central-northeastern Seoul. This
particular pass, however, was originally called Jeongneung
Pass and was only renamed as Arirang in
1926 to
commemorate the release of the film "Arirang".

*Opera:
Sea of Blood ( 1930 )
-during the Japanese occupation of Korea, and
follows the life of protagonist Sun-Nyo and her family as
they suffer numerous tragedies at the hands of the
Japanese before eventually gaining the will power and
means to join the communist revolution and fight against
their oppressors.

Flower Girl ( 1930)

* A poor, rural girl, around whom the plot is centred,

picks flowers on the mountain every day to sell at the


market, to care for her ill mother. Additionally, she has
a blind sister, and her father is deceased. Her mother
is in debt to the landlord, and is bankrupt and unable
to purchase food. The landlord's subordinates
frequently harass the girl and call for her to work for
them, to which her mother refuses. The girl then finds
her blind sister attempting to earn money by singing on
the street, to her anger.

The Happy Day of Maeng jinsa. ( 1943)


- is a Korean original opera about the Korean
traditional wedding ceremonies and customs that
showcases the beauty of Korean art and design within a
hilarious comedy
- The opera debuted in Korea in 2009 with a different
name, Soul Mate.
