INTRODUCTION
Speech

is
the
communication.

Machine

most

effective

metod

of

and human interaction enabled.

Speech

recognition refers to conversion of human

speech to sequence of words.

Speech

emotion state recognition is important for

avoiding monotonic part and for natural interaction
with machine.

BLOCK DIAGRAM OF PROCEDURE

Recording Sound(Microphone)

TECHNIQUE INVOLVED
Basic

parameters extracted from speech for

analysis of emotions are energy, formants,
standard deviation of pitch etc.

Prosodic

parameters like frequency, intensity,

formant frequencies, standard deviation, energy,
duration and epoch count are used for emotion
recognition.

These

features are used to distinguish

emotions: angry, happy, neutral and sad.

four

Contd.
Software

praat is used to extract these features

except epoch count.

Emotional

speech database is created which is

used for analysis and verification.

DATABASE GENERATION
Recording

sound from different individuals at

different emotional states using a microphone.

SoX(Sound

Exchange) tool can be used for

speech file conversions.

Conversion

of these files to wavefiles(.wav).

Recording

can be done at 44100Hz and bit

resolution of 16 bits/sample.

PRAAT SOFTWARE
It

is an open source software for analysis of speech

in phonetics.

Used

for analysis and verification of results.

Analysis

of speech by feature extraction.

Speech

synthesis is also possible given the

articulatory parameters.

Supported

on Unix,MAC,Windows,Linux etc.

SPEECH ANALYSIS
Analysis

of various features: Pitch, intensity,

formant
frequencies,
standard
deviation,
energy, duration and epoch count.
Pitch frequency:
Fundamental frequency of vibrations of vocal cords is
pitch.
Intensity:

Amplitude of speech signal in dB is calculated.

CONTD.
Formant

frequencies:

Concentration of acoustic energy around a particular

frequency.
Standard

deviation:

Deviation of speech signal from its mean value.

Energy:

CONTD.
Duration:

Classification depends strongly on time duration of

signal.
Epoch

Count:

The instants of periodic excitations needed for speech

production in vocal tract system.

EMOTIONAL CLASSIFICATION
General

recognition of emotion based on

features extracted.

Neutral
Angry

and sad emotions: lower pitch value.

emotions: higher pitch values.

Intensity

values: high for happy and angry

emotions compared to neutral emotion.

12

CONTD.
Formant

F2 used to classify sad and neutral

emotions: sad emotion has lower F2 values
when compared to neutral emotion.

Deviation

emotion.

from mean is least for neutral

Energy

based classification: angry emotion has

lower energy when compared to happy
emotion.
13

CONTD.
Duration

of angry emotion is found to be least.

Neutral

emotion has less number of epochs

when compared to sad one.

Angry

emotion has lower number of epochs

when compared to happy emotion.

14

IMPLEMENTATION
All

features except Epoch cont are estimated

using PRAAT software.

Epoch

count is obtained using zero frequency

filtering in MATLAB.

15

CONCLUSION
Hierarchical

classification of emotional states

are done based on extraction of emotional
features and comparison of extracted features.

Used

for identification of angry customers in

call centers, mobile communication,etc.

Also

finds application in psycho therapy as a

diagnostic tool.
