Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Developmental disabilities

Cause = brain abnormality

Stick to routines

Resistance to changes of daily activities

ASD is a wide-spectrum disorder = no one with autism will

have exactly the same symptoms.

Some people will have mild symptoms while others will have
severe ones.

Speech

Repetitive behaviors

Mild symptoms = socially clumsy,

sometimes offensive, not adapted
with others.

Severe symptoms = not interested

in others at all.

Little eye contact.

Professionals are improving in

detecting signs of autism earlier.

Paralinguistic disabilities.

SOCIAL SKILLS
EMPATHY

Ability to instinctively empathize with others is much weaker than

other people's.
Frequent practice = empathy does improve.

Even so, empathy never comes naturally.

Some feel uncomfortable.

Only with people they trust.

Practice and anticipate that is going to happen.

PHYSICAL CONTACT

Sudden loud noises, some smells,

light intensity, temperature =
unpleasant or shocking.

Some say what is unpleasant is

the surprise, not being able to
prepare for it.
Knowing something will or might
happen cope with it much
better.

STIMULI

Higher severity of the autism = more affected speaking skills.

Many do not speak at all.

Repetition of words or phrases they hear = echolalia.

Speech may sound more formal.

SPEECH
BEHAVIOR

Flat intonation.

<3 Routines
Doing the same activity again
and again.
The smallest change can make
an autistic child feel upset.
Do not force them to change,
but help them see changes are
good.

REPETITIVE

DEVELOPMENT
*Cognitive skills fast
*Language skills flaws
*****It can also happen all the way
around*****
HOWEVER, Social Skills = not developed the
same as others.

May be unpredictable.
They may learn something much faster than other children.
