Creating a Manikin

Creating a Manikin and Workspace

Overview
Human Builder is based on a best-in-class human modeling system, which allows
detailed investigation into human-centered design issues within the context of a
workspace before it physically exists. The Human Builder product focuses on
creating and manipulating digital humans within a digital workspace for a first-level
human-product interaction analysis. It also allows the process engineer to create and
populate the simulation world with resources like workers, tools, etc.
There are several tools contained within the Human Builder product, such as:

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2002

Manikin Generator
Kinematics Manipulator
Animation Generator
Vision Simulation
and many others

In this module, you will create several scenarios, each of which will teach you a
different aspect of manikin and workspace creation.

Objectives
You will learn to build a workspace and set manikin properties
You will learn to move the manikin and to interact with the workspace
You will learn to place constraints on manikins
You will learn how to create manikin catalogues
You will learn how to perform a clash analysis

Creating the Workspace

Creating the workspace, or work area, is an essential component of the Human Solutions simulation
software. It is within the workspace that you will create manikins, insert resources and products, and
manipulate the environment so that you can perform necessary performance analyses.

In this section, you will create a scenario within which you create manikins and
manipulate various workspace components.

Setting Manikin Properties

Now that you have created a workspace and inserted a manikin into the environment,
you will need to make adjustments to the manikins so that they accurately reflect the
population who will be working in the real-world workspace.

When you create a manikin, a new node is created in the PPR tree, and contains three manikin attributes:
Body this node contains all of the various body parts
Profiles this node contains general attributes like Display, Coloring, and so forth
Settings this node contains posturing and positioning settings

Copyright DASSAULT

Each of these attributes can be set or changed by right-clicking the attribute

in the PPR tree and selecting Properties from the menu. In this section, you
will customize each manikin by adjusting these properties.

Using the Sub-Tree Procedure

1

Your project from Module 1 should still be loaded with three manikins. If not,
launch V5 Product, start the Human Builder workbench, and insert three manikins.

If your PPR tree becomes unwieldy due to a large amount of objects, you can
simplify the view choosing instead to display selected tasks or activities by
right-clicking on the object and selecting Open Sub-Tree.

You will see a PPR sub-tree that can be modified in the same manner as the PPR tree.

When you are finished, close the sub-tree by clicking the Close button.

Interacting with the Workspace

In this module, you will learn other methods of interacting with the workspace environment. To this point you have created a workspace and manikin, you have moved the manikin around the workspace, and now you will learn how to:
Attach objects this is a method for creating a one-way relationship between a
manikin segment and an object. If the segment is moved, the object will follow. However, if the object is moved, the segment does NOT follow.
Create tracks for simulations this is a method for establishing a path for moving objects.

Redefine offsets this is a method for redefining the behavior of Reach Mode. It allows you to transfer the end effector of a segment to another point. For example, changing the hand end effector from the palm of the hand to the tip of a screwdriver so that the next time the Reach fonction is used, it is the tip of the tool that
will reach the target and not the palm of the hand.

Constraints are restrictions placed between manikin segments and the

you have created them, and are located in the Product tree.

Fix Constraints these are constraints that fix the selected manikin segment in either
orientation or position (or both) at its current position according to the scenario.

After you have placed constraints on manikins or objects, you must click the Update button
on the Manikin Constraints toolbar to update any changes you have made to the object to
which the manikin is constrained. By default, updated mode is set to manual; however, you
can change to automatic updating by setting the following option:
Tools / Options / Ergonomics Design & Analysis / Human Builder / General / Constraint Resolution (manual or automatic)

Contact Constraints Procedure

1

Display the Manikin (Male.1). If the manikin is not displayed, right-click the manikin
in the Product tree and select Show.

From the Manikin Constraints toolbar, click the Contact Constraints button.

Click the manikin segment to which you would like to constrain an object. Then, click
the surface of the object itself. The constraint should appear in the Product tree listed
under the selected manikin.

From the Update toolbar, click the Updates All Constraints and Manikin
Representations button.
NOTE: When you click the Update button, you are updating not
only all constraints, but also the display, reports, and so forth.

The selected manikin segment should move into position over the selected object. Now
that the manikin is constrained to the object, when the object is moved, the manikin
segment will follow.

Fix on Constraint Procedure

1

From the Manikin Constraints toolbar, click the Fix On Constraint button.

Select the appropriate manikin segment and then select the object to which you would
like to constrain the selected segment. You will see a Star appear to indicate the constraint.

Select the manikin from the Product tree and move the manikin to a new location. The
constrained manikin segment will move.

From the Update toolbar, click the Updates All Constraints and Manikin Representations
button to update the new constraints.

To use a new constraint as the target constraint, locate

the new constraint in the PPR tree, right-click and point
to Constraint#.object, and select Reset Target.
Resetting the target constraint allows you to change
the relative position and orientation between the
object and the segment.

Creating Catalogs
In this scenario, you will learn about creating manikin catalogs. Catalogs are items that have been created and saved for reuse as necessary. When creating catalogs, you can save attributes such as:
Posture and Position
Anthropometry
Vision
Display and Appearance
Reference
Angular Limitations (both locked joints and free joints)
Preferred Angles
Offsets
Reports

It is important to note that you should NOT save manikins themselves as catalogs. This creates potential referencing problems. Therefore, each manikin should have a single instance.

Creating a Catalog Procedure

A catalog is a structure composed of the following items:
Chapter this item is a method for categorizing the sub-items contained within.
Family this item is a set of components.
Part Family this item is a set of components referring to a .CATPart document. Part Families
are assigned different sets of parameter values that are managed by a design table.
Component this item is a reference to an external document or entity and is described by
keywords.

Copyright DASSAULT
SYSTEMES 2002

Keyword this item is an attribute describing chapter and family content. Keywords are
user-defined.
The following is an example of a generic family of bolts. It consists of a chapter called
ALL_FASTENERS, families consisting of SCREWS and NUTS, both of which reference
entities using keywords such as DIAMETER and LENGTH.

Performing Clash Analysis

In this scenario, you will learn how to perform clash, or collision, analysis. When you create manikins and a working environment, you must ensure that all elements work
cooperatively together. Performing a clash analysis allows you to determine whether clashes exist in your simulation.

Copyright DASSAULT
SYSTEMES 2002

Interference objects, or collision queues, can be used when manipulating the manikin outside of the simulation.
You can activate or deactivate all clash detection through the user interface.
Clash analysis is performed when a manikin segment or an object attached to the manikin collides with another part within its trajectory.
