actual communicative needs. It enables
the learner to hear, read, and produce

culture.

PREPARATION STAGE:
Advantages.
1. Authentic materials bring learners
into direct contact with a reality
level of everyday English.
2. Authentic materials drawn from
newspapers,magezines and
periodicals are always up-to-date
and constantly being updated.

3. Authentic materials from a particular

source, such as The Dawn, The News etc
tend to work in consistent areas of

4. Authentic materials provide us with a
source of up-to-date materials that can be
directly relevant to EFL learners needs.

Authentic materials are

designed for native speakers of English and used in

SKILL :READING COMPREHENSION

BA
ANNUAL 2011
New ideas also make for conflict. Old chiefs
hated roads and railway: they said they brought
in strangers who corrupted the young people
with new ideas and made them rebellious. They
were quite right. It is far easier to rule a primitive
tribe than a modern democracy where every
individual is ready to criticize the government
where everyone has his own ideas about politics
and religion and where dozens of societies,
unions, religious sects claim independence and
support ambitious leaders who are ready to fight
at any time for their right. The more education a
man has the more likely he is to be independent
in his views and obstinate in sticking to them. A
committee of professors is much harder to
manage than a council of African Chiefs.

And this throws light on another argument

brought forward to prove that individuality is
vanishing from the world the enormous increase
of rules and regulations, the growing power of
police. In my primitive African tribe, law
enforcement was in hands of village chiefs.
There was very little theft. I could leave my
Bungalow wide open and unguarded for three
weeks at a time and nothing was ever taken. We
had crimes of passion and crimes of witchcraft
but no criminal class, no anarchists so we did not
require elaborate structure of law.

FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

When questions were asked from students of BA
about the lesson delivered to them. They all
replied that they have never been taught like this
way before. The teachers never directed them to
use any authentic materials. The teachers never
brought any authentic material in class for
practice. It is a question of 20 marks in English
paper B at BA level examination. Almost 90%
students dont try to attempt it.
I recommend that such type of practice must be
given to students but for it the teachers have to
take pain.
