MANAGEMENT

REMOTE INFRASTRUCTURE
MANAGEMENT
 Remote Infrastructure Management services
consist of remote monitoring and managing
the infrastructure components ,outside the
physical premises of a company’s facilities.
 Taking proactive steps and remedial actions
across the IT landscape.
 It is undertaken through a combination of
offshore/near-shore/global delivery center
which is often termed as an Operations
Management Centre (OMC) which
 RIMM procedures manage the infrastructure,
ensuring uptimes and availability.
NASSCOM STUDY
 Addressable market for RIM – US $ 96
Million.
 Offshore ADM & BPO market- US $ 104
Million.
 Currently only 7% of addressable market
is being serviced i.e. US $ 7 Million.
 Can grow upto US $ 28 Billion by 2013.

 Majority of growth will come from

midrange services and network
towers.(70%)
NASSCOM STUDY – Indian stats
 2005-08 – RIM industry grew threefolds
from $1 Billion to $3.6 Billion at over
50% yoy.
 Higher than overall industry growth by
32%.
 By such a head start India can have
disproportionate share by 2013 of $13-
15 Billion.
 325,000-375,000 jobs will be created
due to this.
NEED FOR RIMM :
Infrastructure complexity is growing and has a

number of dimensions:
 Growing number of servers, network devices,
databases, and OS platforms to be supported.
 Growing number of locations, more distributed
infrastructure, increasing virtualization.
 Growing number of applications and services,
more legacy systems to deal with.
 Growing number of users, more mobile users.
 Increasingly stringent compliance mandates.
 Growing number of vendors to liaise with.
NEED FOR RIMM :
 All this complexity is driving up the cost
of maintaining and operating the
infrastructure exponentially.
 Finding skilled manpower to manage
each aspect of a complex
infrastructure is not only difficult but
at times very costly.

NEED FOR RIMM :
When organizations try to manage with

limited resources:
 Often constant firefighting and ad-hoc
measures are taken.
 Lengthy troubleshooting processes.

 Brittle service quality.

 A poor quality of life for the IT staff

FACTORS INFLUENCING REMOTE
INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT
1) COST– EFFECTIVE

 To hire the services of an off shore IT

vendor who has the infrastructure and
a team of dedicated, technology
driven and skilled staff, is more cost
effective than building an in-house
infrastructure management system
and investing in a team to execute it.

FACTORS INFLUENCING REMOTE
INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT
2) TECHNOLOGY

 Keeping track of the ever-changing

technology and upgrading your system
is not only expensive but also time
consuming. It is wise, to hire a third
party vendor whose core competency
is technology, to do the work for you
so that you can concentrate on your
core competencies.
FACTORS INFLUENCING REMOTE
INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT
3) DEDICATED SKILL SET &

EXPERTISE
 Hiring, retaining and managing skilled IT
people is difficult for a company whose
IT needs are only for the smooth
functioning of its resources.
 These people are attracted to IT specific
companies where they can grow and
put to use their skills.
 Also help in building customer

INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT
4) ROUND THE CLOCK SUPPORT

 It is of prime importance for the IT

infrastructure of a company to perform to
its optimum level and be available at any
given point of time.
 To achieve this, it has to be monitored,
managed, rectified in case of any
problems and upgraded 24x7x365.
 RIM has made this possible by the use of
dedicated skilled resources, which work
seamlessly across different time zones.
FACTORS INFLUENCING REMOTE
INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT
5) TAILOR MADE SERVICES

 The customer has wide number of

options to choose from the delivery
model of a RIM service provider.
 The customer can also request for any
tailor made service which can be
provided with ease.
 This helps the customer to keep their
option open for their outsourcing
limits.
FACTORS INFLUENCING REMOTE
INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT
6) ALIGNING TO COMPLIANCE

REGULATIONS
 RIM enables adherence to Best Practices
on IT Management Processes which
enable IT to feed into regulatory
compliances like SOX, GXP, SAS70 etc.
FACTORS INFLUENCING REMOTE
INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT
7) AUDIT SERVICES

 This service provides recommendations

on infrastructure gaps that may
impact service level quality and
security.
 They assess the status of the current
infrastructure to identify problem
areas related to potential performance
and data availability, security and
compliance issues, and ensure that
they are fixed in a timely manner.
FORCES AT WORK:
 Remote infrastructure management has
become possible through the
convergence of enabling capabilities.
 Evolution in core technologies and IT
architectures.
 Changes in consumer behavior and
demands.
 Developments in vendor and offshore
supply mannagement.
Evolution in core technologies and IT
architectures.

 Remote management tools have

evolved from point tools for device
management to integrated offerings
that support end-to-end management
services.
 This has shifted focus from managing
infrastructure to managing associated
labor costs and productivity.
 This too has resulted from
Evolution in core technologies and IT
architectures.

 Decline in hardware prices ,

virtualization and adoption of open
source , which make labor the largest
addressable cost.
 Simplification and integration of IT
management and governance tools ,
which reduce costs and increase
transparency.
 Increased productivity of telecom
networks.
Changes in consumer behavior and
demands
 Consumer capabilities have matured
particularly around governance
mechanisms and vendor management.
 Organizations are more confident about
working and executing transactions in
different geographies.
 A recent McKinsey survey of 140 CIO’s
have shown that 17 % have off shored
some part of infrastructure.
Developments in vendor and offshore
supply mannagement.

 Vendor capabilities have grown

dramatically (in India).
 The size and complexity of offerings and
capability to manage them efficiently
indicate growing sophistication at
supply side.
 The flexibility of vendors to technology
and architectural control attracts more
customers.
 Increasing investments and new

SUMMARY:
 Organizations make big investments on
their IT Infrastructure to ensure the
uninterrupted service at all times.
However the expenditure bucket for IT
enhancements is never ending due to
high maintenance cost and support
cost. Remote Infrastructure
Management is the solution here for
the organizations that are focusing to
reduce their IT support cost in a most
effective way.
