Introduction of 1 Malaysian Concept

Introduced by PM, YAB Dato Sri Najib Tun Razak on April
2009
It evolves around culture of excellence, perseverance,
acceptance, education, integrity, meritocracy, humility and
loyalty
1Malaysia concept caters the needs of all sector of the plural
society and to ensure equal distribution of wealth between
racial groups, between states and federal

SWOT : 1 MALAYSIA CONCEPT

Strengths in implementing 1 Malaysia Concepts

The use of Malay as the national language of the country will preserve and sustain
the growth of the language and culture of other communities living in the country
Subjects such as Tatanegara and Pendidikan Moral is a helpful tool in teaching the
young impressionable pupils with civic duties to maintain racial harmony in the future
Geographical factor is another factor to consider in achieving national unity as
proposed under 1Malaysia (should not be thinking as Sarawakians or Kelantanese or
Sabahans, insteadas Malaysians)

 Arts and other cultural aspects of Malaysia should also be enriched by the
amalgamation of the myriads of cultures available in Malaysia
Thus far, this kind of togetherness could mostly be seen only during festives
Fashion, performance arts, music, etc.; must be able to portray the essence of
unity 1Malaysia tries to achieve
For instance, a group of Chinese students are involved in a Dikir-Barat
performance or Malay students are celebrating the Mooncake Festivals and
playing the Tanglung with their Chinese peers

 The Rukun Negara is another mechanism that could be used to achieve the goals of
1Malaysia and the NKRAs
The 5 tenets promote faith, loyalty, respect for the law of the land and wholesome
proper conduct
Those qualities are needed to move towards a better Malaysian society and identity
To inculcate the spirit and values of togetherness and sense of belongings, regardless
of race, religion and creed
Insertion of the patriotic values in the syllabus and textsbook make students to think
and believe as a Malaysian

Weaknesses in implementing 1 Malaysia

Concepts
1Malaysia should not be mistaken as in 1Indonesia where
everyone are forced to assimilate into 1 particular race and
speak only 1 language
1Malaysia is about all ethnics living and working in better
harmony and sharing economic benefits in 1 country call
Malaysia

 Most Malaysian citizens have no interest about mixing with their peers of different
races and ethics
Social problems among youth especially the youth who abandoned their babies
after pregnant through free sex are very critical in Malaysia
Government has measures to combat this problem by introducing sekolah
harapan
The establishment of School of Hope in Malaysia aims to provide opportunities
for pregnant students to continue their schooling and guided self-improvement
and error to reduce the red lock

Five Blind Men and an Elephant

In a survey conducted by the Merdeka Centre for Opinion Research

pertaining to the Prime Ministers 100 days in office:
76% of the public surveyed were aware of the 1 Malaysia concepts
23% agrees in saying that it promotes unity between the various races
18% saying it is about fairness and equality among the races

Without the Government spelling out the precise meaning of 1 Malaysia, different people are giving
their own interpretations which not only differ from each other but are in conflict with each other

The Malays generally interpreted 1 Malaysia to mean real adoption of the national language as the
home language by every citizen as happens in other multiracial countries. They also expect the
abolition of Chinese and Tamil schools and ensuring the private sector has a fair participation of
Malays and other Bumiputeras

The Chinese and Indians interpret 1 Malaysia to mean amendments to the constitution to eliminate
provisions for the special treatment of the Malays and their protection by the Rulers, removal of the
quota for Malays in the Civil Service, quota for awards of licences, contracts and Aps. All awards to
be on a competitive basis and open to all irrespective of race. They also expect perpetuation and
maintenance of Chinese and Indian schools by the Government

1Malaysia Youth Fund

Launched to provide financial support for young people to undertake
creative projects that nurture national unity.
Reflected the government's commitment to empowering young
people.
"The scope and the projects should address three criteria focus on
nurturing unity in Malaysia, have a multiplier effect on the general
community, and be led by young people.
To give opportunities to youths to use their imagination to the fullest.

Back to school initiative

Each primary and secondary school students - from Year 1 up to
Form 5 - received RM100 before the end of the first schooling
semester.
Government school fees are also removed, allowing Malaysians
to enjoy free public education for the first time in Malaysia.

does not differentiate social class pupils by giving equal treatment.
use teaching time to the maximum to conduct activities by giving them
motivation, smile, humour and praises besides giving them general
reprimands but not nagging.

Steps and Measures to Overcome

Problems In Multicultural Classroom
Children of different races should socialize within their groups
Avoid prejudices against other races
Students cultural beliefs should be respected by the teachers
Teaching and learning activities carried out in the classroom must be able to
inculcate mutual trust among pupils
The process of racial socialization regardless of religious affiliation should be
expanded

How to improve teachers behaviour in

multi-ethnic classroom
Self-awareness and understanding of their own attitudes and values
Understand the students they teach
Make more meaningful visits to students homes; get to know their parents and
their life conditions
Visit and get to know the communities (participate in community service)
Make critical and formal analysis on historical, sosiological, anthropological and
educational research findings

Conclusion:
A teacher should be a role model for students
Develop programs aimed at developing the students with clear rules and
instructions for decreasing negative behaviour
Avoid using approaches that are opposed to human norms
