APPICATIONS OF

POLYMERS
IN
PRESENTED BY
CDDS
JAGADEESWARAREDDY

Polymers mainly used as a binder in

tablets preparation & flow controlling
agent in liquids,suspensions,emulsions.
Used as a film coatings to mask the
unpleasant taste of drug & enhance the
drug stability.
Polymers modify drug release
characteristics.

Ethyl cellulose
It is a water insoluble polymer

It used for coated system of solid dosage forms

It is applied as an organic solution/aquous colloidal
polymeri dispertion
Water soluble additives have been incorporated into
ethyle cellulose to modify drug release
Thikening agent in ice creams
This can be incorporated as a carrier into matrix
preparation

Ethyl cellulose has been used for solvent

granulation of water sensitive drugs.
Ethyl cellulose used to microencapsulate the
water soluble drug.

CELLULOSE ESTERS
This can be used in osmotically controled drug
delivery system.
Coating of cellulose acetate is rigid and dose not
expands during drug release

It is used for both immediate and slow release drug

preparations.
Drug release decreased with increasing polymer/drug ratio
Cellulose esters used in the preparation of microencapsulation
methods.
Polymeric membrane is impermeable for the drug but
permeable for aqueous fluids.

ACRYL POLYMERS
Acryl polymers used in coating systems
It can be used in transdermal films preparations.
Polymethacrylate used as retarding material in matrix tablet.
It is used in the microencapsulation methods

POLYCAPROLACTONE
It is used in film coating process.
It is suitable for long term delivery extending over a period
of more than one year.
It is used in encapsulation of steroids, naltrexone etc.
permeability of these drugs reservoir devices has been
increased by using copolymers of caprolactone.

DEXTRANS
Conjugation with dextrans has resulted in prolongation of
the effect, alteration of toxicity profile, and a reduction in
the immunogenicity of drug.

CHITIN AND CHITOSAN

These have been used for preparation of
macromolecule-protein conjugates ,which may retain
the activity of the proteins, in order to increase the
duration of effect and decrease the immunogenicity of
proteins.
It is used in liposomal formulations.
Gel formation can be obtained by interactions of
chitosans with low molecular counter-ions such as
polyphosphates,sulphates,crosslinking with
glutaraldehyde.
Chitosan is used as an excipient n oral dosage.

Eudragit NE30D,RL,RS30D have also been used in

dermal and transdermal system, they form clear
and transparent films that are insoluble in water.
Silicon matrix films can be prepared by
incorporating the drug in the polymer phase.

POLYPHOSPHAZENE
This can used in the preparation of hydrogels.
Use as intraocular lenses, hydrophilic coating for
biomedical devices.

Some
of the polymers like silicons ,Ethyl vinyl acetate,
Polyphosphazene etc used in Implantable
system.
