Importance
During an earthquake, a gravity dam enters a forced-vibration

state, which induces vibrating movements of the upstream face

with respect to the static at rest position. The relative
displacement of the dam-reservoir interface changes the static
condition of the reservoir, which induces pressure waves. This
system induces the pressure wave propagation and reflection
processes at solid boundary of the boundary of the reservoir and
its free surface.

The wave reflection only at the dam upstream face is off

interest during seismic response of the coupled fluidstructure system. The immediate result of wave
reflection is the hydrodynamic pressure, due to the
elastic deformation of dam. The hydrodynamic pressure
generated in this manner can only be introduced in the
analysis by considering water compressibility in the
reservoir.

Forces acting on Dam

Difficulties in Modeling Concrete Gravity Dam

Experimental investigations of the dam-reservoir system are

difficult as simulation of dam-reservoir model or prototype would

be too complex to set up.
To get the accurate results, it is necessary to consider the damreservoir,
dam-foundation(Soil-Structure)
and
reservoirfoundation interactions.
To model the effect like absorption at the base of the reservoir
and foundation of dam, radiation condition at the far end of the
reservoir.

The concrete gravity dam is massive submerged structure having

an arbitrary shape.
As the dam may be partially or fully submerged, affects the
dynamic properties.

Proposed Outline of Research Work

3D modeling of Reservoir-dam-foundation interaction

using ANSYS,ADINA
To determine the dynamic response of dam by
considering the dam-reservoir foundation interaction

Analysis techniques
The simplified formulas evaluated are generally based on many

restricting assumptions, such as neglecting water compressibility and

reservoir bottom absorption.

The finite element modeling helps in considering the different material

properties of the dam and foundation. The arbitrary shape can be

included in analysis easily.

Under the horizontal ground motions, the up stream face of the dam has

considerable effect in reducing the hydrodynamic pressure.

The hydrodynamic pressure on rigid dam due to vertical ground motion

become extremely large as the hydrodynamic pressure waves do not

propagate in the upstream direction resulting in a truly undamped
system without any energy loss.
